Golf Galaxy Instructors

Anyone have any experience?
Now that I've finally lost the 10 (ok- 20!) pounds I gained while my wife was pregnant, I really want to take some refresher lessons. I play ok, but I know I could be much better, especially once someone tells me what I'm doing wrong!

Anyway, there are so many "PGA Professionals" who hang out their shingle today, it's tough to choose an instructor. I don't have any friends who play, so no help there. I really just don't want to throw away my money on someone who isn't really gonna help me.

The Golf Galaxy near me seems to have reasonable rates, especially when you buy multiple lessons. I'm basically trying to get the most bang for my buck. I'm not a 5 handicapper trying to get down to a 1. I'm more like a 25 trying to get better and get more enjoyment from the game.

Thanks for any input you guys can give me!

AS far as GolfGalaxy - I've never used their instructors as my main swing coaches, but I"ve had some good "mini lessons", and knowledge from my local GG instructor. If you feel comfortable with his/her personality - I'd say to give it a shot.

As far as instruction in general - I've witnessed several people who've not taken lessons for years struggle with an instructor who tries to change their swing too much. My suggestion is to have a very frank conversation with your pro about his methodology: Is he/she trying to CHANGE your swing, or trying to MODIFY your current swing?

Good instructors work with what you've got, and "tweak" it for better results, rather than trying to mold your swing into something too radically different. You need to be clear with the instructor what you are trying to accomplish with your instructor, and communicate your ultimate golf goals. I read this interesting quote from a golf forum: "Teaching golf is like playing golf...the best lesson given on the wrong topic is equivalent to a perfect golf shot aimed in the opposite direction from the target...while both might be "perfect," since they were mis-aimed, the outcome is far from it."

^^EXCELLENT advice, thanks. I am comfortable with my overall swing, and I think I have a pretty fundamentally solid swing. When I hit the ball pure, it's straight as an arrow with good distance.

I really need help tweaking my swing to be repeatable and trustworthy. I want the 30% of my shots that are bad to be as close to 0% as possible, so I can really start to work on course management.

I will definitely tell any instructor that I am mostly happy with my swing, I just need them to tell me where it goes wrong when I mis-hit.

Being an Instructor my self I just have one thing to say to you my friend.

Ask questions before you take a lesson from any Instructor. I myself would gladly answer any questions a potential student would ask. You need to find out what the Instructors methods and or beliefs are about the golf swing. There are alot of great Instructors out there just not all of them fit everyone's needs. I consider myself a very good Instructor and so do my students but then again it is not they way for everyone I meet. I never get affended if someone dosen't agree with my teaching that is there preferance and it should be that way.

I alos work for Golf Galaxy just not as an Instructor but they do have PGA Class A's in place at each store and are very creditable. Just go and ask questions and see if this Instructor is on the same page as you or if he or she makes sense to you and then just go from there.

Even the great's change Instructor's from time to time so the trick is finding which won works for you and that can only be accomplished by asking questions before and getting a feel for the Instructor and then giving it a unbiased try to see if they can help you out.

Good Luck and if you need any help let me know..........

Beware I bought a 3- lesson package with a GG instructor and it was an awful experience. Of course, I can only share my experiences with this one instructor but although he was allegedly in the business for 25+ years, he couldn't diagnose a couple of small issues I had in our first session. I was puzzled by this and then I started thinking that maybe he was going to milk this over the entire $130 package and then walah, miraculously fix them in my third and final lesson.

Funny thing happened though in that I got the Golf Digest issue where Ernie Els talked about his recovery from knee surgery and the article went on to show how he is fixing a couple of issues he was dealing with post-surgery. I theorized that this just happened to be the same bad habits that I was getting into by taking the club too far inside on the takeaway. Later went out to the range and after 15 minutes diagosed that this was indeed my problem.

Needless to say, I promptly went back to Golf Galaxy and got a refund for the balance of my lesson plan. With this in mind, I couldn't agree more with your previous poster who noted that you need to find an instructor that you are on the same page with as well as one that will map out the best course of action for you. For what it's worth and especially if you have one in your area, GolfTech is the bomb!!! They are a little pricey but if you truly want to be a better player, those guys will get you there.

Golf Galaxy has PGA Member instructors BUT I think you might want to start with lessons outside. The very beginning golfer might benifit from not seeing ball flight while they learn Grip ,posture and ball position but I think seeing real rather than simulated ball flight would be to any golfers advantage. But by all means start with a PGA member or seasoned apprentice.
