Fairway Bunkers!

Recommended Posts

I have never played better golf than I am at the moment, but anyway on Saturday in the monthly medal, I had about 150 yards to the green from a fairway bunker and chunked it about 90 yards into another bunker cost me a double on the 18th. I was level playing the last and thinking under par, ended up with 73 great!

Anyway I have never had any consistency from fairway bukers I would hit a good shot from one 1/10, it is usually fat or thin. Any tips?

I'm sure you've heard the "basics": dig in (especially right foot) for stability; move the ball back towards the center of your stance; take one more club and choke up (for control); keep the lower body quiet; etc.

In addition, I personally set up a little different: I have my body more centered over the ball with less tilt away from the target and more weight on my front foot then normal. During the swing I try to stay centered over the ball and feel as though there is less weight shifting towards the rear foot in the backswing - almost feels like I have a little reverse pivot going or that the weight stays on my front foot. And I absolutely feel that you still have to hit down on the ball (shallow divot); trying to "pick" or sweep the ball out leads to trouble for me.

Good luck!!!

go on a grass range and make sure you practice hitting the ball before you take a divot thats how you should make contact with the shot unless you sweep the ball and dont count bladed thin shots. make sure they are solid with no grass behind the ball no matter if its a soild toe heel or pured you should end up doing the same thing in the bunker

if you still arent getting results make sure your body is still on the back swing reduce weight shift

From my experience I have found that there are a few ways to hit a fairway bunker shot. If its a long shot (like a par 5 2nd) I will choke up on the club and play for the "sweep" shot. I also do this for bunkers with a higher lip on it or when I want to hit a wood. If its a longer approach shot I keep my weight forward and hit down on the ball. For some reason I tend to play a fade with this shot so clubbing up is important for me. If I'm 90-110 out, I play a punch PW and rely focus on making a good descending blow to the ball with an abbreviated finish.

One thing I do, which may not be a good idea but it works for me is I choke up on the club. That way I should hit it on the upswing or very end of down swing and take out very little sand.

Good point, a lot of people (myself included) forget that when you dig down in the sand with your feet you're bringing yourself closer to the ball by an inch or so, that in itself is enough to cause a chunk if you forget to choke up a little bit.

The principles of fairway bunker play are simple. But as with all golf shots the lie depicts the shot.

For a good lie, normal fairway bunker shot.

1: Ball slightly back in your stance to make sure you hit the ball solidly and 1st.

2: Shouldn't need to over club, your normal club distance should apply pretty much.

3: If your feet sink an inch into the sand then lower your grip by an inch and so on.

4: Steady yourself but don't intentionally dig your feet in, you're only making the shot harder.

5: Make your normal swing.

Bad lie, i.e. buried

Same as above except try to make a steeper swing into the ball with a lofted club.

Expect the ball to come up considerably short.

If you have to go up over a lip then put the ball forward in your stance for a higher trajectory and take a club with enough loft to get over it. Make a good positive weight shift during the swing to make solid contact with the ball.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
