Need some help deciding on some irons

R7, Tour Burner, AP1 or X-20/X-22?
I had an earlier post about how I was fitted with the MP-57's in hopes that my game would get me to that level of playability...Come to find out, I was fitted by a pro (no longer there I find out today) for 1" long and 3* upright..i am 6'2"...so far off it isnt funny....they are willing to give me full trade in value for set (even though i only ordered 5-PW) due to the screw up along with $50 off a new set and I am looking at the following:

TM R7 - $399
TM Tour Burner - $499
Titleist AP1 - $699
Callaway X-20 or X-22 - $499/$699

I didn't get a chance to hit the Burner or the AP1 but of the other 2 I really liked the R7 look, feel and performance over the Callaway. Thing is I wasn't looking to dump another $800 on a set up clubs so if I can get out of the Mizuno's and into a more suitable set with $50-$200 out of pocket I will be pleased as punch.

Any feedback on these irons?

I tried all 4 of those irons in May, and settled on the R7's as well. I thought they just felt better to me than the X20's. I really like the burners, but I hit the long irons of the R7 set better. Even though they don't have the stong loft of the Burners, I still hit my R7 4 iron 200 yards. If I really step on it off the tee, I can get 210-220. The AP1's did feel "like buttah", but they were just not nearly as forgiving as the R7's. For my game, it was the R7, followed by the burners, then the X20's and finally, a distant 4th, the AP1's.

Hope this helps!

I'm new to the game (in the respect that I've been hacking for several years, but am committing to lessons and actually working to improve for the first time this summer - so the moral is take what I say below for what it is worth, which is perhaps not much, though everything is opinion based I suppose) and I've been looking for a new set of clubs and have been hitting a lot of different ones lately.

I don't want to like the R7s because of what I've read in regard to TaylorMade and the way they put something new out every 10 minutes. However, I have hit them several times (albeit always indoors with a launch monitor), but of all the sets I've tried, they feel the best and I've hit them the best.

The last time I was at Golf Galaxy, of the clubs I tried, I narrowed it down to the R7s and the X-22s (which I thought felt a good bit better than the X-20s).

However, I still want to try a couple of other sets if I can - namely Cobra FP and the Wilson Ci7 (as I've read a lot of good things about the Wilsons).

But of the ones you've listed, I've hit all of them at one point or another (again, all indoors, and not completely consistently since I'm more or less a beginner) except the Tour Burners, and I would say my order (of the four I've hit) based solely on hitting would be:

1) R7

2) X-22

3) X-20

4) AP1

If you factor price in, I'd probably switch the X-20 and X-22 in the above list. While the X-22s felt better for me, I'm not sure they felt so much better that they would be worth $200 more at this point.

My $0.02

Get the R7's and spend the rest of the money on lessons. Kenny Perry is still playing the R7's with enormous success.

The AP1's are awesome as well, although I don't think they merit a $300 difference. Can't beat Callaway forgivenss either.. but the R7's are very nice.

I ended up going with the R7's and spent two hours on the range today.....love them......thanks!

Congrats! What wedges are you using? I tried the TM TP RAC Satins, and, while they had great stopping power around the greens, for my swing, I just could not get as consistant 3/4 to full swings out of them. I ordered the R7 SW and LW from Ebay, and am a happy camper now.

Good Luck!
