I seem to remember hearing that Titleist had a "HX" type ball that they were testing but Callaway put a lawsuit on them because Callaway said that they had stolen their patten. Anyone else hear the same??

It's not due to a Callaway Hex dimple pattern law suit, that pattern was used MANY years ago. Callaway didn't invent the dimple pattern used on their balls.

The pic was just taken at a weird angle to make it look like the hx , no such thing as hx titliest ball.

i would love for you to tell me what kind of angle would make a normal golf ball looks hex and why this is the only picture that has been talkin at "this angle"

no weve all seen that pic before..it is the angle and the lighting...its not a Pro V1 HX. just standard titleist dimple pattern

If I remember correctly, another ball mfg had a hex pattern out long before Cally. I believe it was the Dunlop DDH. While the exact HX dimple pattern could be patented, a different HX pattern should be OK.

That is not a hex dimpled Titleist ball. No such ball has ever been seen by the public (to my knowledge), let alone in a Tour event. The use a ball in a Tour event it has to be USGA approved and would appear in the USGA conforming list as well as in the Darrell Survey for whoever was using the ball.

 

The reason why the ball in the photo looks like it has hex dimples is because the photo was captured from TV. The peculiar thing about TV images is that they are all "edge enhanced" to make the picture look sharper. This edge enhancement sometimes has the effect of making gradual changes in color appear sharper - or in this case round dimples made to look angular.

 

Anyway, if hex dimples are better than round dimples, why are Callaway not using them on all their golf ball products?

Not that they look like hex dimples to me.... but I think they are different than the regular Pro V1. I have seen Pro V1s like this before.... the dimples look closer together and deeper than regular.

No such thing as a Titleist with hex type dimples.

 

Hexagon shaped dimples originated in the early 70's with the Royal Plus 6 ball. It was ok, as was the Wilson Pro Staff with it's "truncated cone dimples". Always went back to Titleist, though.

 

I don't get this "HX is better in the wind" sentiment. If you look at the windiest event of the year on tour, I believe the Honda, virtually the entire first three pages of the leader board were Titleist players. There is also considerably fewer players using the Callaway ball this year on the PGA Tour versus 2005.

In the 1970"s it was Uniroyal that came out with the hex style dimple.
