D.C. golf

Recommended Posts

Moving there next week
How is the golf life in the D.C. area? I'll be going to the Waldorf or Bowie area. Also, I'm coming from San Antonio so if anyone can compare the two areas that would be great. How long is the golf season in D.C., here in S.A. it's basically year around because of mild winters. Is it possible to play in the winter there?

Thanks so much for the heads up. I'm a member at Andrews AFB already and they have three courses but I'll be getting out to as many courses as possible while there. Are courses in D.C. generally well taken care of?

I think you would be hard pressed NOT to find great golf in ANY part of the country today. DC, like any great city, has an awesome variety of gold. VA and MD bost great courses.

There are a lot of good courses in the DC/NoVa/MD area. My favorites - Glenn Dale, Eisenhower, Timbers At Troy, South River are all about 1/2 hour from Andrews. A few others include Renditions, Enterprise are also good. The better courses are off of I-70 about 1 hour give or take from Andrews. Worthington Manor, Hollow Creek (great course), Maryland National (right next to Hollow Creek), Musket Ridge Golf Club and PB Dye Golf Club are the other great courses. Check out http://www.golfmaryland.com/ as it lists a lot of the courses in MD. Let me know when you move out this way and maybe a few of us can welcome you into the area by playing a round at a nearby course. As to the weather, I was playing until Jan 1 last year. This year, the weather got a bit colder so I stopped playing somewhere in November.

thanks for all the information. It seems the golf in that area is awesome. I was a little hesitant about the move because San Antonio is a golfer's haven, but the more I read these posts I feel better. An hour drive is not far for a course, especially when I can drive for an hour here to go to a course and still be in San Antonio. R U guys going to check out the LPGA championship there this year?

I may make it out to Congressional this year. Only if Paula is out there... :idhitit:

Also try playing Quantico, the Woodlawn Course at Ft. Belvior and about the billion courses we have in Virginia. You can literally play your way all the way down to Virginia Beach (speaking of which, the course at NAS Oceana is a good course too!)

I have somewhat limited experience with nicer courses in the area, but I can say something about the weather. With milder winters increasingly being the norm, I've been able to play 3-4 times a month November through February. You'll get some weeks near freezing or below, but a lot of oddball weeks of 50-70 degree weather mixed in.

I'm also willing to play as low as mid-40s, which has helped me squeeze even more golf in.

Welcome to the area! I've lived here almost my whole life, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Golfing in the Mid-Atlantic is pretty good. Don't just limit yourself to the DC area. If you have time you should think about Williamsburg, Richmond, S. Penn, and Ocean City. There are a tremendous amount of outstanding courses in the area, so other than pace of play there is no need to join a club. If you follow the advice of those given above, especially by clickin on Golf Styles, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The golf is definitely better in the DC area than in San Antonio, just maybe not the prices. :idhitit:

Yes...I believe they haven't maintained it very well in the last several years. Two years ago, I lost a ball in the middle of the fairway because of the clovers and white flowers growing there...lol If they would only bring it back up to a decent standard, I'd be playing there more. I also like Marlton. Played it quite a few times early last year and the year before. Great course and decently maintained.

Also if you can get on at Andrews, NAS PATUXENT RIVER in Southern MD has a nice course. My home course, right on the cheasapeake Bay. SO EXPECT WINDY CONDITIONS ALL THE TIME...

And don't believe the fair weather golfers, you can golf all year round. Granted WE ARE CRAZY. But I have in about 25 rounds so far this year.

OC has great course, Mrytle is ~ 8-9 hours away

We'll have to hook up at Andrews, maybe do a home and home.

Yes, Marlton's been kept in decent condition, but there's been talk about selling it to developers. I haven't played there since the beginning of last year (decided to branch out and play all the different courses throughout the state. Favorite one from last year was Hollow Creek right next to Maryland National. Course was in awesome condition and it's a terrific course to boot.

25 rounds in already ?? Geez...I think your crazier than me....lol..although I just flew back from Fl and played 36 a day - played Orange County National's Crooked Cat (3 rounds there) and Panther Lake, Falcon's Fire, Metro West and two rounds at Shingle Creek. When we had that warm weekend a few weeks ago, I was actually down at Mattaponi Springs (terrific course). I'm up to 12 rounds so far. A buddy of mine has about 25 rounds in as well. Everytime I call him, he's on the course...lol

I'm actually in Richmond right now and will be in the DC area tomorrow. Thanks for all the information. I drove through Augusta to get here, it is a mad house down there. Thank God for XM radio, I was able to listen to the tournament while I drove on the PGA channel. I will admit the area is much greener than San Antonio...so far so good. Look forward to playing somewhere on Saturday...will be looking to this thread for the course. :stop:

Rasberry falls IS a great course, I just moved from Northern Virginia by Leesburg. Rasbery Falls is a Gary Player track is I remember right. Also try Landsedowne, but i don't remember if that's private or not. One course that IS private, but pretty special, is Beacon Hill. My father has been lucky enough to play it, and told me it's the nicest course he has ever been on (when he played it), and he's played Princeville, Kapalua, Pebble, Sawgrass.

Ahhh... Beacon Hill.... great, tough track... and for the last year or so... closed due to chapter 11. A management company is doing minimal work on the course to keep it so that it somewhat resembles a golf course, but it is tied up in the court system right now. Lansdowne is private, but you can play it if you stay at the resort.
