TT Black gold vs Rifle Porject X

Was looking to hear any comparisons between these two iron shafts from those who have hit both. I am in the mood to do some experimenting this summer and have narrowed it down to these two shafts. I would either get the black gold in stiff or the px's in 5.5. Thanks and look forward to hearing your comparisons.

project x are way more expensive and are just as heavy in the higher flex., 6.0 and above.

just tried these two shafts on the launch monitor at my fitter's a few days ago. black golds are pretty heavy shafts (125-130 grams) and have a more stiff flex (35-39 lbs.) and are for more aggressive swings (95-100) with an iron. the black golds gave me a fairly low trajectory with a 90 mph swing speed. The px's are a more midweight shaft, at about 105-110 grams, and are for a more fluid tempo with a faster swing speed. Plus the black golds are a little more expensive.

 

 

 

Black golds are running about $148(golfsmith) and $156(golfworks) for a set and are in the 125-130 grams range.

 

 

 

Project X's are running about $208(golfsmith) and $220(Golfworks) for a set and are in the 125 grams range.

 

 

 

both on higher end flexes.

I would like more information as well. I have been playing PX7.0 softstepped twice to get +1" and I liked flight and distance.

 

I am looking for new shafts but not real sure which way to go.

 

690.CB tour heads with ss around 100 with irons.

Not sure how many topics like this are out there. I know I have left at least two reviews before, but here is another one.

 

A couple of weeks ago I borrow two five irons outfitted with Maltby M05 heads, one with black gold, one with Proj X from my local clubfitter. I hit about 50 balls with each at the range and about another 25 each on true tempers shaft lab fitting system.

 

BLACK GOLD: I loved the look, the goldish color is very cool. The trajectory is spot on to what they say on their site, mid flight with a boring trajectory. The ball does launch a little higher than the s300, which was my shaft at the time. Distance wise I didn't notice any difference between the black golds and DG's. Weight wise the black Gold felt heavier than the S300 even though the difference is only a few grams. The weight during the swing, felt considerably heavier with the black gold than with a s300. I felt like I was swing the club much slower, but when the club hit the ball you felt like you just hit the ball with a hammer. Another thing that I noticed was that my divots were much more shallow with the black gold's over the Proj. X's and DG's. If you are lookin for a stepless shaft with a little feed back this is your shaft. I would equate feel to that of a DG with sensicore.

 

Proj X's: Much easier to hit shots with these shafts. I was able to hit it high, medium and low. With a nice smooth swing the flight is lower than the black golds and only slightly higher than my DG's. Weight wise these felt effortless to swing. In the Maltby head I didn't notice any difference in distance over the black golds or DG's. I think the biggest difference between the two was that the shots hit with the proj x's didn't leave the target. Although the black golds dispersion was better than DG's it didn't compare the Proj. X's.

 

I ended up going with the Proj X's for my Cobra SS forged heads. Swing weighted to D4. Played with them yesterday for the first time and they are about a half club longer than the S300's I had before. I didn't have my wedges done, but now I have half a club larger gap between PW and 52*. I will likely have the wedges done this week. For me the Proj X's were just a better fit. The black golds were great however. Given the choice I would choose black gold's over DG's. If you like the feel of DG's with sensicore, you will likely love the feel of black golds.

I ended up going with 5.0. The project x's felt a little stiffer to me, expecially in the shorter clubs. If at all possible, get fit. My five iron swing speed is around 90 and the clubfitter said I could have gone with a stronger flex, but with the 5.5's I felt like I had to work harder to get the ball to go straight. He also said tha the Proj x's tend to play a little stiffer than other rifles.
