grip solvent substitute...Denautured alcohol?

Title says it all. The wife tossed my bottle of solvent...looking around the house and I have some denatured alcohol......will this work?

It might evaporate too fast.

Use mineral spirits if you've got them.

I use varsol. Works very well and is cheap!

You can find it either at automotive shops or at hardware store as a paint thinner.

some golf pro told me WD-40 works the best but takes awhile to dry.... I don't know I haven't tried it.

I've heard the thing about WD40 before, but I just can't believe it works. It's a lubricant, and it isn't all that volatile.

A good tape solvent for gripping golf tape has to have a few basic properties. It can't be too good a solvent, or it will dissolve the adhesive right off the backing of the tape.

It needs to be volatile enough to evaporate within a reasonable amount of time, but it can't be too volatile, leaving you with a grip half way on and stuck.

You'd prefer it to not be too toxic.

I've found that mineral spirits and naphtha work best for me. Light, volatile paint thinners tend to evaporate too quickly.

I personally hate the water based tape. That stuff's a pain to get off the shaft after it's been on for a while. You can use a tape stripper for steel but it's still a bear.

Another thing I've heard used that makes a little sense is women's hairspray..the kind in a can that you're grandmother probably used. It is essentially an adhesive in a solvent in a way. It's meant to dry quickly, and the actual stuff that holds the hair in place probably doesn't interfere with the tape's adhesive. That might work in a pinch.

You might want to try 1 part dish soap and 3 parts water. You dont even need water activated tape. I have been doing this for years and never have had any problem.Whether you are re-gripping alot of clubs, or simply replacing your own, you'll find this to be a very effective and money saving solution. I would stay away from solvents such as Naptha, gasoling, etc.

That's another one that I've heard about often enough to believe that it somehow works, but I just can't figure out why. Dish soap. Slippery as it gets and water isn't going to evaporate from inside the grip nearly as fast as an organic solvent. But I've heard several folks say it works, so I don't doubt it. I even have a sneaking suspicion that the Golfsmith "non-toxic" grip solvent is probably something just like that, water based.

i use paint thinner....it's really really cheap and it dries faster than anything i've used club is ready to go in 15 minutes tops

I have tried a lot of the solvents mentioned and the best for me was using dish soap with 2-3 parts water. I regripped my driver this morning and the grip wouldn't budge after 5 minutes. Even when applying multiple layers of tape I just put a little more soap on the taped shaft and the grip slipped right on.

Ummm...NO.

WD-40 breaks down grips like vaseline on condoms. Really bad call. Avoid WD-40 for regripping.

Never thought about that! I used to change grips on my BMX bike (many moons ago!) and used soapy water. Glad to say that I never had a grip slip, can't say that about my foot coming off the pedals!
