Anyone record their stats on your scorecard?

When playing alone, I try to do this.

Explaination:

I will record my score per hole like any other round. I usually use +-0 for par, +1 for bogey and so on.

Below my score on my card I write in under my name things like number of putts, fairway hit?, GIR?, OB?, Unplayable lie?, and H2O?.

Under those records with a "?", I put a checkmark.

It helps me determine where my score grows on a per round basis so that when I review my round at a later time, I can see where all those strokes are going.

So far the glaring record in this table of a scorecard has been the number of putts. Usually I two putt which kills me. Then there is always the dreaded three putt. I average 36 putts per round. Yikes!

Most of this is probably just useless info, except the number of putts field. Let's face it, if you aren't hitting the ball well for a particular round, then your number of fairways hit will reflect that.

I read about this in Golf Digest some time ago.

Just curious if anyone else does this regularly.

I try not to do this while I am playing in a foursome as it tends to be time consuming if you don't stay on top of it.

I used to do this, but I got too caught up in things like putts per round and GIR. However you can't really look at it like that since all stats are intertwined. Have a bad driving day and you GIR are probably not going to be too good, poor ball striking and leaving yourself 40-50 foot putts will throw off your putting stats. It just became too much for me and I just went to playing it one shot at a time and my scores dropped significantly.

I'm sure very low handicaps who have one area of their game they are trying to improve could benefit from it, but it was just too much for me. If it's working for you, great, keep it up.

There is a nice handicap feature in golfq.com which lets you print out a scorecard for whatever course you play and you can keep track of all those stats very easily. Lots of good coupons there too.

Hope that helps.

I do kind of a slight variation of this. I started doing the putts, GIR's, and fairways but have since narrowed it down to just putts along with total score. When I first started doing this I noticed the same thing as you, my putting was costing me way too many strokes. So in an effort to change that I added this little variation. In another column I would track how close my first putt got to the hole. 1 foot, 3 feet or 6, whatever the case may be. The obvious goal here was to eliminate the dreaded 3 putt and I must say it has worked quite well. It really forces me to focus on leaving the first putt as close to the hole as possible and I've even started making a lot more 1 putts, without even really trying!

I realize this borders on a sickness and makes for a messy scorecard but my brother came up with an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all this:

Hole Avg for par 3, 4, 5

Penalty shots per round

Fairways hit, missed right, missed left

GIR, GIR inside 20'

Total Putts

Putts GIR

Lag Efficiency

Putts 1-3'

Putts 3-6'

Putts 6-12'

Putts 12'+

Shots inside 12' from: 20-40yds, 41-60, 61-80, 81-100, 101-120 yds

Greenside saves (Conversion/Opportunity) for chips, sand, pitches and off green putts

I gave him a pretty hard time the first time I saw the spreadsheet, then he politely reminded me he's a plus hdcp (vs. my 4). I started keeping track of this stuff and it really lets you know where you're weak.

I also keep track of FIR, GIR, and putts. One thing thats different then mentioned above is if you have a poor ball striking day that your putt stats will be worse. For me if I have a bad ball striking day then that means I have short chips, so I use less putts overall.

I also use this link to see where I SHOULD/COULD be at.

i do score, fairways, greens in regulation, putts and penalty strokes (whetehr ob, lost ball, unplayable lie, etc...). i play a lot of the same courses so i can compare rounds. i also always mark pin placement. prefer courses that have a pin sheet, but if not, i make a note on the score card r = front, w = middle, b = back.

what keeping stats has really showed me that my greens in regulation are poor (although i was really pumpled the last round i played by hitting more greens then fairways) and chipping isn't doing me any favors.

On my scorecard during practice rounds I keep track of my score, putts, fairways, GIR, and the reason why I might have made a mistake on a hole. At the end of my round I pause and think about what might have happened without looking at the card, then I tally all the stats up and then really figure out what I did. Then I'll go putt for about an hour and hit on the range for another hour.

In the box for recording your score I keep track of the following:

dot in upper left corner - fairway in regulation

dot in upper right corner - green in regulation

number in lower left corner - putts

On the lines below my score I keep track of attempts and saves for sand shots and up and downs.

At the end of the round I tally everything up and enter the data into an Excel spreadsheet set up to keep track of my score, handicap, fairways in regulation, greens in regulation, number of putts per round, sand save percentage and up and down percentage. It has really helped me to identify weaknesses that I need to focus on in practice.

I keep stats on the course and transfer them to an Excel spreadsheet after the round. I use this to spot areas of improvement, and to compare my game to previous seasons. I don't generally keep my score on the course, I just recreate it after the round (I helps keep me focused on playing one shot at a time). If I do use a scorecard, I mark F (FIR), G (GIR), U (successful up and down; unsuccessful attempts get a strikethrough), S (sand shots, just like U), a numeral for putts and a P for penalty strokes. It sounds like a lot more trouble than it actually is.

It is worth the effort, IMO.

Yup, I saw that on "Playing Lessons from the Pros" and started doing it exactly that way. It's remarkably useful for analyzing your performance after a round.

For example, I played yesterday, and made par on 4 of the 6 par-3's on this short course. However, 2 out of the 3 1-putted, which means I didn't even hit the GIR, but made a save.

It really helps me figure out what to work on (short game and ball-striking, mostly).

Thanks for the reminder. I don't claim to have come up with this system on my own, but I could not remember where I picked it up from.

As an example based on my last 10 rounds I am averaging the following:

FIR - 78%, GIR - 45%, Putts/18 holes - 31, Up and Downs - 46%, Sand Saves - 56%

GIRs and Up/Downs are well below where I would like to see them and I need to focus on accuracy with my approach irons. This used to be the strongest part of my game, but after switching irons twice in a 3 month period after playing the same set for 5 years, I haven't found my old form yet. Hopefully with a little more range time my game will come around.
