Forgiving Wedges?

Does anyone really play the more forgiving wedges out there? I'm not talking about say the CG11, but like the sand/lob wedges of the more game improvement type irons like X18, BB, slingshots, os2?

I mean is there really that big of a factor when it comes to wedges? Is there really much of a difference say between CG11 vs CG10? And should high handicappers be playing more forgiving wedges as well?

"forgiving" wedges are supposed to give you a more repeatable ball flight and keep the ball stabilized in the air. It is basically for a person not looking to shape shots, but rather hit a more consistant distances w/ more forgiveness. High Handicap players do not have to play forgiving wedges, but it is a good idea to consider especially if you have trouble from 100 yards and in.

I actually have the Slingshot wedges, both the Gap and Sand wedge. They are very forgiving but I have had a few problems with distance control. I hit the SW anywhere from a smooth 110 to a hard 130 yards. The faces of all of the Slingshots seem to be hot but you really notice it in the wedges. The reason I don't really play the wedges is they seem very difficult to chip with for me. The face seems to be a little too hot on them and the soles are rather large so it is almost impossible to ajust the lofts for speciality shots around the green. They are very nice to hit high and straight shots though.

For many golfers, the would be better off playing wedges that match the look and feel of their irons. Without having to deal with a different swingweight, shaft, and/or grip, they should have more confidence in the shot.

Back in the day, Ping's eye2 wedges were every bit as good as the traditional wedges.

For me, I play Mizuno MP series wedges that offer the same swingweight as my MX-23/MP-37 irons. I tried a Vokey but it felt like boat anhor.

I just bought a CG11 gap wedge to go along with my CG10 sand and lob wedge. For full shots I think a more forgiving wedge could benefit a high handicapper.

If you like to open up the face to hit flop shots you may be better off with a wedge with a different shaped back. The GC10 is much better for that kind of shot than the CG11.

More forgiving wedges are not just for high handicappers though. I went to a Champions tour event a few weeks ago and many of the players had CG11's in the bag.

I like the CG-11 54* out of the bunker.

Since i play in Texas mostly, the low bounce 54* works best and with it'swide sole and heel, it's real good out of bunkers.

This allows me to play a thin soled lob wedge for around the green stuff.

I've switched back and forth as to which wedge I use out of the bunker. On the surface, it would seem to me that your highest loft wedge should be the one used in bunkers but that hasn't worked very well because of long bunker shots. A 60* lob wedge isn't very good on long bunker shots for me.

Has anyone else tried the Nickent ARC wedges. I was playing Vokey's (Chrome 351 bent to 50*, Oil Can 254-10, and Chrome 260-06 bent to 59*) but saw these at the pro shop in chrome, black, and oil can finishes. They look like muscle-backs but have a polymer in the "muscle" which creates perimeter weighting. I bought a 52-10 and 58-10, partly because I wanted to check out the Rifle Spinner shafts that are standard, but have been playing for the last two weeks. Distance with the ARC 58 seems to be about the same as the Vokey 59* or my Nike Forged 58*, but the ARC 52 only seems to have the distance of the Vokey 254-10; leading me to think one or the other loft is off. There is a noticeably softer feel however than the Vokey's however.

If I continue to hit these Nickent ARC 52* and 58* wedges well, I may switch out my set's PW for the ARC 48-08. Nickent has some amazing products.

The distance control issue is to be considered greatly. The cast wedges with cavity back can be too hot on good hits, but might give it all back if you cannot hit the face of the club.

Traditional wedge designs offer more spin for holding greens, and are more precise on distance when you hit them near the middle of the face. Chances are the clubs you are talking about GW SW and LW are short enough that even the hacker can hit them on the face.

I think a lot of it really depends on how you use the wedges. For instance, I never hit full shots with my SW or LW, so I can give up some forgiveness. However, my GW is typically hit full, and I want any full club to be at least somewhat forgiving.

Having said that, I have been playing CG11s . . . :stop:
