.350 vs .335 and Bore Through

differences in tip stiffness
I recently hit a Callaway x460 tour driver that had a Fuji TP 26.3 .350tip shaft in it. I was really impressed with the way the shaft performed, and I was interested in installing it in my Ping G2. My Ping G2 has a .350 hole, but my local supplier only carries the 26.3 in the .335 tip. I was wondering how much less stiff the tip would feel if I installed the 26.3 .335 vs. the 26.3 .350 tip. Also, the Callaway x460 is bore-through. I was wondering how much more stiff the bore through plays vs. the non-bore-through. I was thinking that if I special ordered a 27.3 (a little more tip stiff than the 26.3) in .350 tip that it would perform very similarly to the x460 setup. What do the experts think about this?

Thanks,
Golferoy

Here is my take. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE! .335 and .350 are virtually the same. I reshafted my Callaway 545 with a .335 NVS 65x. The techs at Golfsmith Headquarters said the reason why they use the .350 is that when the manufacturer makes 100,000 shafts they SAVE money. If they use a bit less graphite per shaft and save money.

I haven't noticced ANY difference in the performance of my driver. If the specs of the shaft are the same, torque, launch and stiffness. Just Do it! Confidence is more of a factor than .015 the thickness of a piece of paper.

I agree, the difference between .350 and .335 is minimal.

However, the difference between borethrough (callaway) and standard bore (G2) is night and day. Especially with a shaft that has a long parallel tip section like the Tour Platform. The long bore of the callaway is going to negate much of the soft tip action of teh Tour platform and make it much more tip firm. If you don't like the soft tip, you're going to have to tip the Tour platform significantly to stiffen the 3" PTS in a normal bore.

As for which weight to use, while it's true taht the 70g will be stiffer overall, pick the one that suits your tempo. If you you're a hard swinger that can sometimes get quick, use the 70. If you're looking for maximum distance go with the 60.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure, I've never played the YS-6 for more than a couple of swings on a friend's 905T (bore through).

A shaft that comes to mind that's a bit stiffer in the tip, but still has some activity is the Prolaunch blue. However, it's got a much different feel than the Tour Platform, so it may not be what you want.

Hopefully someone else can chime in and give you a good reccomendation.

The YS is a good shaft too. I like your thoguhts. I think what you are feeling is the Callaway S2H2 hosel in the Callaway. I switched to it in August and can't go back. I'm just more accurate with it.

The PING G2 is also an AWESOME club, too! Obviously I like PINGs too, look at how much I like both companies.

STAY away from the Graf Pro Launch. I hit nothing but High RIGHT balloons with it.

Think about getting some Nano Technology into your mix. I love my Aldila NVS. The YS is good but a little bit old school technology wise. Nothing special about it.

Just my thoughts.
