to 704 or not to 704?

Give me your opinions on these~!!!!

Here's the quick story,

My buddy that plays in our weekly foursome is looking to ditch his Ping ISI-K's and offered me some dough for my TA7 Tours. I wasnt really in the market for some new sticks, but it got me thinking. THere really isnt much difference between the TA7 Tours and the CG4 Tours (Other than material) so I am not ready for that switch yet.

My thoughts on irons were that, and I play to a 4.8 USGA, were that I need a bit of a cavity for forgiveness (Dont work the ball a ton), dont like offset, like a more compact head, and need a bit of a sole since I do dig a bit as I hit down on the ball.

I thought about CG2's, 735 (755s if they would ever come to market) or used TM Rac CB's.

However, I found a set of 704CBs in great condition for $399. WHat has me looking hard at these is it has everything I need in an iron, and most importantly they have Tour Flighted Rifles 6.0s in them.

SHould I get em??? I currently have DGS300s in my TA7 Tours, swing the 6 iron at 85-87 mph, driver is 100mph.

Of course, If I get these, I will be switching the wedges as well to keep the family of feel going. Vokey 52.08 and SM58.08 are what I am considering.

Love my 704's, great set of clubs. I think your analysis on them is right on the mark. Very traditional look, with a fair about of foregiveness. Pretty easy maintenance as well, as they are stainless steel.

 

Mine originally had DGS300's which I played for a year. Then switched to the rifles and got a much smoother feel and a bit higher flight. Since you'd be making a similar shaft switch, you should factor that into your decision.

I have a set of 704s that I play occasionally. They aren't wunderklubs as far as forged cavity backs go. What I like about them is that the feel and playability resembles the old DCI Blacks. If you are a DCI lover, the 704s are an extension of the old line. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been interested.

I love mine, I think the sole is a great feature of the clubs: wide, but not game improvement wide and it doesn't dig. Very playable clubs.

I went and hit these for a while today at the range. No matter how much I want to switch from Cleveland to TItleist, I just cant get a reason yet. The 704s look better, but I think, at least in this case, the shaft was just too strong for me. Rifle Flighted 6.0s. Think I needed 5.5s.

 

Put em head to head against my TA7 Tours, and my Clevelands flat out felt better, went further, were able to work the ball better. Perhaps it was the trust, not sure. But I may have another look later at them, just not the right time to switch I guess!!!

 

I may wait for the 755 or go for the 735 but will definitely compare to the CG2 and CG4 Tour. I wish TM still had the old RAC CB/MB combos!!! They feel sweet!!

 

Of Course, if I make the Titleist switch, I get the Vokeys to round it out. Otherwise, my CG10s stay.....although I think I need to grind my 58* a bit.....

You've got a great club in the Clevleand's, so even if you stick with them you're going to come out ahead of the curve.

 

However, I'd strongly urge you to spend some time with the 704's with DG. Some guys are rifle guys, others are DG gold. It's a pretty sharp divide between the two. To me, the rifles feel harsh and unforgiving, DG's feel like butter.

 

Whatever way you go, I'd definately give the 704's a chance with DG S300.

I think you are right. I believe the experience was not what it could have been due to the Rifles, plus I may have put it in my head that the shaft was too strong for me. Also, I just put new grips on my TA7 Tours, and the 704s needed some new ones.

 

Oh well, patience makes virtue, right????
