can anyone tell me exactly what the swingweight of a club affects, especially on irons. i have been wondering what type of swingweight i should use.

I would like to know as well. Like how you can put lead tape under the grip of a club and not affect swingweight but still make the club heavier.

let say you have a standard of D2 on irons for instance... you increase the SW to let's say D5.. well it will make the club play a little softer CPM wise. Most ppl cant tell 1-2 swingweight apart.. hell maybe even 2-3 SW's.. Play whatever swingweight feels good to you, dont get caught up in playing heavy weights...experiment.

 

As for adding tape under the grip and not effecting SW then you gotta add roughly and equal amount on the iron or low on the shaft to "counterbalance" what you put under the grip.

Let me give this my best shot . . .

 

There are two kinds of weight of a golf club. The total weight is flat out how much the club weighs on a scale (much the same as if you were weighing yourself on a bathroom scale). Straightforward right?

 

The swing weight of a golf club isn't a weight at all, it is a ratio between two areas of a club around a given balance point. To make things simple, let's call these two areas the head and butt of the club. The heavier the head of the golf club, the heavier the swing weight. The lighter the head, the lighter the swing weight. Conversely, the heavier the butt, the lighter the swing weight, and the lighter the butt the heavier the swing weight. Longer clubs need lighter heads (why driver heads are the lightest) to maintain the same swingweight while shorter clubs need heavier (check out the headweight on your L wedge and see how heavy it is).

 

Now the balance point is an integral part of this system. One can go from dynamic gold steel (120g shaft) to Dyanmic Gold Superlight (100g) in the same head and maintain the same swingweight. How? Because DGSL and DG have a different balance point to make sure the same length of club will swing weight the same.

 

Why is all this important? It's related to tempo. I play my clubs shorter than standard. As a result the swing weight is D0. This is nice because I can swing faster than i coudl with a D5 swing weight. However, if I get a club with a heavy swing weight (like my L wedge) I tend to throw it down from the top since the head feels so heavy to me. It's a good idea to match all your swing weights for your clubs to help you maintain your tempo. Also, OEM's are notoriously bad about getting swing weights right. Check yours to see, it's easy to fix with a $50 scale from golfsmith and some lead tape.

This is a REALLY good question, and I'm sorry I missed it the first time.

 

It's something I struggled with understanding for a while.

 

The reason why you can add lead tape under the grip of a club and it not "affect" the swing weight is beacuse the weight added is in your hands.

 

Try this little example, take a broom, and hold horizontally away from you, first with the sweeping end away from you. Feels pretty heavy right? Now switch it around and hold the sweeping end in your hands, notice how much lighter it FEELS even though the part you're holding is very heavy.

 

On a swing weight SCALE lead tape at the butt end will bring swinng weight back down because it's decreasing the difference between the butt to head ratio. However, since you're holding the gripped end, you won't FEEL it as much as you would weight added to the head.
