r7 425 vs. r7 460

Hey folks,

 

I'm new here and would like to say I really enjoy the site.

 

I have an opportunity to pick up a TM driver for a great price. I am looking for some input on the r7 425 and r7 460. I currently play a Callaway FT-3 Tour with a 73g Diamana x-flex, neutral bias. This club has been quite good to me, but I am not looking to replace it, just can't pass up a good price. My current back up is a 905T with a Fujikura Fit on-11! Pro 95, x-flex, which I was fitted for by Titleist.

 

I'm a 6 handicap who tends to swing a little too hard at times. I normally make good contact but I'm that guy good for a couple of 3's off the tee which has screwed many of my rounds. My miss tends to be a sharp hook often due to overswinging. I am looking to keep it in the short grass. I'd also like to be able to cut the ball when necessary. I'd love some feedback from anyone who has hit both or anyone who can give me a recommendation for either club.

FWIW - the R7 460cc is a far superior club to the R7 425cc in all aspects. Here's my review based on a demo day last weekend:

 

R7 460cc - This club is absolutely the best driver I've ever hit or owned. It has a marvelous combination of forgiveness, a super-hot face, and very very good distance. I was also very surprised by the REAX shaft - I typically do not like Taylormade's OEM shafts, but this shaft felt smoother, and more accurate. This club was the absolute pinnacle of what a driver should be - a great combination of feeling, forgiveness, and super-hot distance.

 

FWIW - I thought the performance was VERY close to the FT-3. Here was my review of that club as well:

 

FT3 Draw Driver - This was my last stop of the day. I loved the feeling and performance of this driver. It has a hollow carbon sound which is completely different than an all-Titanium driver. It was VERY long, and felt supremely forgiving, even on mis-hits. I would say this was a tight race with the R7 460cc overall for one of the best drivers I've ever hit. I liked this driver tremendously.

Were you launching the ball really high with the r7 460?

What loft were you hitting?

I have been looking at both of these drivers and am leaning toward taylormade but was

trying to decide whether or not to wait on a x-stiff shaft.

I currently hit the 454 with x-stiff grafalloy comp nt shaft.

I like the looks of the FT-3 but hearing a lot of good comments on the TaylorMade.

Matter a fact I haven't heard any negatives on the r7-460.

I picked up the R7 425 in feb (10.5 s flex, SS 96-100) I played my first round with it on sunday...and it was amazing.

 

After snap hooking both driver and 3 wood off the tee for the first 6 holes (winter rust and tempo issues, I guess), I got things straightened out. I was absolutely killing it for the rest of the day...at least 270 and very accurate. If this is any indicator of the upcoming season, look out.

 

I played a 983K with an R flex YS-6 shaft and couldn't control it to save my life...I could barely keep it in play never mind find a fairway.

 

That being said, I love the 425 and would recommend it to anyone.

I have nothing but good things to say about the FT-3. It is very long and quite forgiving. The sound at impact is different, but not bad. I have come to love the thump it makes. I would recommend hitting it when deciding between TM and Callaway. Like any club, it's what fits your eye and what produces a desired result. I don't think you can go wrong with either club with the right shaft. That's my 2 cents.

 

Thanks for the other responses...I'm leaning towards the 460. I am getting the chance to put a 425 in play this weekend, but with a stiff shaft. Hopefully I will get a decent feel for its performance.
