plus 1/4 or minus 1/4, I hate company spec differences

I hate the fact that every companies specs for their irons are different. I know my lie angle at around 61 for a five iron but know that some companies like titleist are plus 1/4 in length compared to ping, mizuno, or cleveland. Just not sure of the pro's or con's or what the ideal length of a club for an average build, height should be. Any suggestions, I have been told it is better to error on the side of being a bit over in length as it is much easier to trim then to add to length. Or do you think that the 1/4 inch either over or under is not that important.

More than getting irritated with company spec differences you should investigate each companie's production variations. Far exceeds company to company spec differences. The variation on driver lofts is absolutely hysterical. Easily can be up to and over + - 1 degree what is stamped on the sole. I've got 3 Ping G5 drivers---all say 7.5 on them. I had them digitally measured and they are 6.75 degrees, 7.9 degrees, and 8.5 degrees. Probably why Ping goes from 7.5 to 9 because the 7.5 covers everything in between with production variation.

I suggest going to Ping's website and using their "web fit". It only takes a few minutes.

Be sure to wear shoes when doing the measurements. You will need another person to measure your height and the wrist to floor measurement is especially critical. Once you've got those measurements entered, the webfit will give you a suggested club length, lie angle, and shaft flex.
