My Demo Day

I was shocked.....

Good evening,

I have posted a few items on new irons, and I wanted to thank all of you who helped out.

Well, I had my own demo day today with 8 different irons (all were 6 -irons, std length and lie). I thought I would share with you what I hit, impressions and what I decided on.

Everything was hit off a mat into open air range, with an objective viewer besides myself. I tested everything against my own benchmark....my TA7 Tour 6-iron with TT DGS300.

Ball flight with TA7 Tours is very high, almost ballooning, and goes about 160-165. SS is about 85-87with 6 iron

Here is what I tested:
1) CG4 Tours (TT Action Lite Tour Stiff) - Great feeling, and hit the ball far (170). Seemed to balloon a bit, but not as much as TA7 Tours. Was seeing a bit too much of the left side of the range.
2) CG2 (DGS300 Stiff) - Solid and long. Workable. Slight draw and penetrating flight. Average distance was 170+. Didnt get much more out of it when I layed into it. Felt great.
3) Ping I5 (ZZ lite stiff) - Solid. period. A bit on the clunky side, but I know I would get used to it. Felt incredibly solid at impact. Ball was always going 170ish, but a bit high. Seemed to have inconsitent ball flight for me though. Solid though. I was blown away at its performance.
4) Ping S59 (ZZ Lite Stiff) - Unimpressive. When I set it next to the ball, i got excited. It looked awesome. Love to have them in the bag, not for me though. Felt dead. Flight was a bit low for me. At times it seemed like it ballooned. I think I was trying to help this iron too much as It did not work for me. Disappointing for me. I was ready to order when I set up to it.
5) CG4 (Action Lite Stiff) - Clunky. Too much offset. Ballooned and went left. Did I mention it was clunky? Felt great though. Went far.
6) Titleist 775 (NS Pro Stiff) - Clunky, but not Cg4 Clunky. Too much offset. Didnt feel great. Went high, but not far. Shaft??? Benched as quickly as theS59 and CG4
7) Titleist 735 Stainless (TT DGS300 Stiff) - Real surprise of the bunch. Harsh feel at impact, ball flight weird to me. Never felt or sounded solid on any hit for me. I thought this would be the one I ended up with but, I was very disappointed at its feel, and performance. Never got further than 160 yrds for me. Looks great.
8) Titleist 695 cb - (TT DGS300) Felt heavy when I picked it up. Set up nice. Beautiful Iron. When struck it produced a piercing draw that easily went 175. When I layed into it, I cleared the 200 marker on one shot. This thing just felt solid, went where I wanted it and just threw out a high, penetrating shot. Blew me away. I thought this would be too much club. I sneaked over to the grass and hit it out of the rough. Same result. 80% swings were going 175. 100% swings going 190+ with a hard draw. Awesome club.

I left with my pro and my buddy confirming the 695's were the one. Ordered on the spot. Getting fitted on Friday....have to leave on biz trip. Only bad thing, I heard they are on back order until May 15.

My top 3 were: 1) 695cb tie for second) I5 and CG2. I5 wins for more forgiveness, CG2 for more feel.

Go try em. I was blown away.

great review, i always love trying out clubs like that :stop: Why no Bridgestone or Mizuno clubs?

Thanks for the post, good stuff. I can remember years ago doing that same thing. I went to teh local Mega Large Golf retailer. They have a range and demos of every iron that is available. I can remember grabbing 10 6 irons that all had the type of look I wanted. Cavity back players iron.

 

I hit balls for over an hour. I got tot he point where I had it narrowed down to 2 heads. The Macgregor 1025cb and another set. I choose the Mac's. That was 5 sets ago. But it was a great day to go through that process, and your story reminded me of that.
