X100 vs. S300 shaft opinions

What is everyone's opinion on which shaft is better in a players cavity back. Is it solely based on swing speed? Is the X100's dispersion much tighter? Do the S300's have better feel? Currently I play S300's in MP60's. Recently I played several rounds with a +1hcp, -1hcp, and -2hcp, all of them played the X100 in a players cavity back. I'm a -6hcp and swing just as hard as any of them, driver SS 110. They said with the X100 they feel their ball flight was much straighter and distance control was much better. Does anyone have any experience with both of these shafts because I would appreciate any input, opinions or comments on this topic? Thanks.

Swing speed is only 1/2 the equation, how you load the shaft is probably the most crucial element to picking the right flex for you.

 

Swingers with a smooth tempo who don't load the shaft hard can play with softer flex (Luke Donald plays S300 in his irons and an S flex Fuji Six in his driver). For a swinger who doesn't properly load an X100, they would give up accuracy, distance, and height by using too stiff a shaft. Hitters with a fast tempo who load the club hard at the top can often get better dispersion and eliminate a big miss using a stiffer, heavier, shaft.

 

Only you or a very good clubfitter can decide. If you're really curious, take your six iron, and have it reshafted iwth X100 and see what you think (worst case scenario you're out $30 to reshaft your six iron). A lot of people I know who swing in your same range feel that X100's are a little too demanding. When they're on it's great, but if they're a little bit off the shafts can be a bit too much.

 

Another option is S400, it's just a bit stiffer than S300 (and a couple of grams heavier) which may be exactly what you need if you're inbetween S300 and X100.

 

Give it a shot and see what you think.

in my opinion... if you're a 6 handicap... it's all about feel. go with what you like.

try an x100 softstepped. this way you should get a tighter dispersion than an s300 and will have a bit more feel than x100!

Don't shy away from the X100s. IMO, they are more accurate than the S300s and do provide superior distance control.

Guess I'll throw my 2 cents in, but I cant agree with the above anymore. Go try them, and see what you think.

 

For me anything in a X is to stiff. That being said, all the "driver charts" say I should play an X100. I carry my driver about 280, but dont really hit my irons super long. Even my 757 feels kinda to stiff. I tried the X100, because I thought that was the "right" think for me to play and knew after the first swing they were wrong. I can live with an S400, but stay with the S300.

 

If you like both, play the X100 for accuracy, and the S300 for distance. Just stay in your comfort zone and you'll be fine.

 

I would love to try the project X, and see what those do...

 

I was a +2 when I had time to play if that counts.

Handicap and SS are only part of the equation...your tempo is the biggest part...

Like TMFan wrote, if you are a smooth swinger, but you don't load the shaft, then X100 might not be the shaft for you...

If you have an aggressive swing with a violent transistion thru the ball, then you should be able to handle X100 or Rifle 6.5 or any other X-flex type shaft (Harrison, Apollo, etc...)

You should also think what kind of ballflight do you want (are you looking for a lower flight?), what is your typical miss (high right, low left, high left, etc), etc...

but i say try S400,

 

my SS is around 115(120 from the SpeedStik) and yet, i use S300 in my irons because i get to swing a lot easier, still get the right distance and trajectory

 

but most importantly, you should try them out!

I would say try the x-100's, it looks like you can handle them.

If not throw the s400's in and call it a day.

I have a 95-99 mph 6iron speed and ~115mph driver speed.

Have X100s in my blades and they work okay for me, although I do think that they cost me distance - I have a VERY smooth transition and therefore I'm not sure I load the shaft to get the most out of it.

That being said, S300s have too much dispersion for me and feel like wet noodles on many swings.

Have not tried S400s, but just put PX 6s in some new clubs I built and so far I fricking love them - they're the best match yet I've found for my SS and tempo.

I have a 110-115 driver ss. I thought I needed X100s for I bought a couple clubs with the shaft. It launched too low and felt too harsh for me. I have a naturally low ball flight so these just made that worse. I ended up with the Ping AWT X which flex a little softer and launch much higher than the X100.
