I'm NO fan of Haney's......but......>>>

Recommended Posts

Tiger Wood's is swinging BETTER than I've ever seen him swing a golf club......backswing is MUCH shorter/tighter and more rounded.......pivot is vastly improved......he's "turning through the ball" better than I've ever seen him.......his "set-up" angles are VASTLY improved......he could win by 10 this week......

However, from my observations and IMOP he's doing basically nothing that Haney teaches.......NO "out, around, and up" takeaway.....(btw, at least on the range, Toms has eliminated some of his).......NO manipulating the arms in the transition/downswing......NO turning the face down through impact......???

Anyway, these are MY observations and I have to give credit where its do.......Tiger Wood's golf swing IS vastly improved IMOP........

Tiger's already won tournaments on courses requiring good driving, when he did not drive the ball well. His second shots, short game, and putting will, this week, as during those earlier tournaments, be the keys to his fifth jacket. I picked Vijay in the Master's contest because I was hoping that his putting would continue to get better, and he'd use that to ride his relatively good ball striking. Still, I think it's Wood's tournament to lose. We'll just have to see!

Man, I'll tell ya'......its a "different" Augusta National than I've ever seen.......been to 14 of em' and with the additional length on #1,4,7,11, 17 they've REALLY toughened it up......IF they get any wind to speak of I would NOT be surprised to see EVEN PAR to - 5 win the tournament........#'s 1, 7, 17 were ALL "birdie holes" (relatively "easy" by Augusta standards) prior to these changes.....NOT anymore........

I was very impressed with Tiger's golf swing/ball striking.....MUCH moreso than I expected to be.....and VJ/Appleby were very impressive on the RANGE.......as was Pampling........going to be very interesting to see how this years tournament "shakes out" by Sunday AM......

Slicefixer,

Does Tiger's swing look more like one plane swing now?

Yes, DEFINITELY.......maybe not in the true "Hardy" definition, but, its DEFINITELY MUCH more "around his body" than before........

The things that I noticed that were different from last year were.....

- GONE was the "out, around, and up" backswing.....he's VERY connected with his upper arms....

- GONE was the loooooong armswing........back to a much more "connected/synched" armswing

- GONE was the fairly obvious "turn down" with the right arm through impact......club is working through in a much more "passive" action........

- NOT nearly as much "chased" down the line.....slightly more left with his body post impact......still not enough for my "taste," but, a LOT more left than last year when he looked like he was "swinging to right field"....which I detest.....:stop:....

NOW, that being said, this WAS on the RANGE........NOT on the course........but it was DEFINITELY a helluva' LOT better golf swing than I've ever seen him make and that goes all the way back to 94'/95'........in fact, the "compact" nature of the backswing was VERY reminiscint of his golf swing years ago......just on a MUCH more rounded "plane".........he was hitting a TINY draw......almost imperceptable.......but it was moving basically right to left about 5' - 10'........beautiful shot to behold........and he could also hit a knuckle cut with the driver.......he's damn sure not too far away.....MUCH closer than I expected to see.......:D

Yet Tiger won Masters last year. Yikes.

What else does Tiger need to work on?

Man, that's about as "loaded" a question as one could ask.....:stop:

IMOP he needs to work on the "connection" of his upper left arm to his chest through impact and into the throughswing........ALLOW the clubhead to swing a bit more left WITH his body/trunk/core post impact.......but, even that was better on Monday than what I'd seen via TV earlier this year.......

ALL I can say is this, I've been critical of his golf swing in the past......and if one is going to criticize one should be willing to praise when its due......and IMOP its due......he's obviously worked VERY hard on his golf swing and he had the guts to change what was pretty darn good in 00'......so hat's off to him......IMOP if he ties his arms in a lil' more with his chest he's going to be "there".......we'll see what occurs from here......been "fun" to watch.....thats for sure.......:D

Slicefixer,

I had the pleasure of hearing Jim Hardy speak a while back, and one of the first points he made is that golfers are athletes, not because of endurance or strength, but because of their ability to recover when out of position and deliver the clubface somewhat square to the target. He said that out of everyone he'd ever seen or played with, that Tiger was by far the best recovery artist he'd ever seen. I guess that's part of the reason he can still win and contend week in and week out even though his swing may be out of sync (although I'm sure his shortgame has a lot do with that as well).

Mr. Hardy also stated that Tiger's (and Phil's) biggest problem was the death move for a one plane golf swing - leading with the right elbow on the downswing which left the club dead open at impact. He said that was a big reason why Phil and Tiger were so successful when they played the fade, but so consistently found the right rough and OB when they tried to play the straight ball.

Do you agree?

I would definitely agree with his statement that their downfall is trying to play ANYTHING other than a slight fade........not sure about the trailing elbow though.......I'd have to hear it from Hardy to understand EXACTLY what he means.......but I DEFINITELY agree about them being DEAD when they square up and try and hook it.......at least in the past........not quite so much now........

Both have such quick hips and a quick hip miss when attempting a fade is NO big deal......you either pull fade it/pull it.....no biggie........"quick hip it" when trying to hit a hook and aiming/set-up for it and your DEAD......you can B I G block it one minute and SNAP hook it off the planet the next........open up and play a fade and you eliminate the BIG miss.......IMOP......:stop:

slicefixer,

great analysis. love reading your comments.

curious, can you explain what you mean by "compact" back swing.

also, when you say "swinging to right field" are you refering to a closed stance, a large in to out swing or something else?

I'm so jealous....I'm watching today's play on TIVO thinking....I see all the slope in the course and greens but I know it's gotta be 10 times worse in person.....someday I gotta get tickets and see it for myself.

After seeing Tiger's round...although he shot even...he had MANY opportunities and that usually means he can get it going....today's 72 can easily turn into a 65 tomorrow.

Vijay must be playing well, to shoot 67 is great but to have a bogie free round is even more amazing.

Also gotta say I'm very happy to see 2 old timers playing well....Boom Boom and Gentle Ben....of course Freddie always plays well there but to see Ben up there at 1 under is great....I would love to see him make the cut.

Well Slicefixer, next year you need to save a seat for me.....or sneak me in your gym bag. :stop:

Shorter "armswing".......more like he was in 00'......last year he had a tendency to get a bit "long" or "out of synch"......on Monday.....NADA....

"swinging to right field" simply means swinging "inside-out"......although technically its NOT inside - OUT......but too much from the inside to more down the line.......rather than "inside to inside".......

Hope that makes sense......:stop:

inside-out, thats kind of what i thought.

Not necessarily.......you'd like the wrists to be "set" to their fullest so as to extend the ARC to its maximum while maintaining perfect synchronization of the arms to the chest/torso/trunk/core.....:stop:

Every swing has the elbow leading the arms, arms leading the hands, hands leading the clubhead.

What the hell is hardy talking about?

sheesh

Not in Mr. Hardy's view it doesn't, at least the right elbow.

swingdrill2.jpg

One of his big keys is the feeling that your right palm is "covering" the ball at impact.

He went on in some detail about it, even telling about Hogan discovering the key to preventing this "right elbow leading the downswing" in a book called "secrets from the vault."

I've been searching long and hard for this book, but can't find anything. Supposedly Hogan backed out at the last second and refused to publish the secret of the right elbow and took that secret to the grave.

True or not, it's a great golf story.

I liked Florida's win---SEC!!!!SEC!!!!SEC!!!!

I couldn't even watch LSU's collapse!

Starting to hit balls again now that my wrist is healing. Still having difficulty staying connected after impact and keeping the grip from spinning. More rehab is needed but I'm making progress. It's amazing how far off you can get after 3 months and how hard it is to try to play at 75% healthy. I'm taking it slow 'cause a messed up wrist is serious business.

Thanks for asking. Enjoy The Masters!

Naw, you can come along and HELP.......then it WILL fit your price range! :D I've got guy's flyin' in from all over the USA.......started with a few students scattered all over TX then, through word of mouth, just grew into a pretty big deal......REALLY a pain in the a** to put together and with today's prices the profit isn't there anymore......didn't do it this year for that very reason......didn't have the time to answer ten zillion questions, etc......I'm sure I'll do it again next year......going to Augusta really isn't that hard to do......tickets are available on Washington Rd. at all times......when you decide to go I can tell you the "rules"......hehehe

I can vouch for Slicefixer's opinion on how well Tiger is swinging. This Monday I had the privilege of being at Augusta National with Slice and his son, watching Woods from behing the ropes, under the big oak trees on the right side of the range. Driver in hand, Tiger striped seven shots in a row AT THE SAME POLE, four with a very slight fade, three with a slight draw. He even laughed after he handed Stevie his Sasquatch.

I won't comment on Haney, Hardy, et al, as I am not well versed on the intricacies of their teachings. But I will say this: Slicefixer is as knowledgable on the golf swing as anyone I have ever encountered. Knowing the guy for thirty years (we played high school golf together in Texas), I can attest to his enthusiam for teaching and his ability to "connect" with students of all abilities. I spent two days with him last month (came all the way from South Carolina), learned to eliminate lateral motion, rotate fully, and hit the "knuckle fade." This stuff works. Handicap index at 2.1 and dropping..

Enjoy the Masters, folks. What a special place is Augusta...

Would you say Ernie Els has a long arm swing? Does that mean his swing is not well synchronised?
Yep.......IMOP he could vastly improve the CONSISTENCY of his ballstriking if he synched up his arms a bit better........IMOP the "hitch" in his transition is him "starting his arms first" in his transition in order to get them back "in synch" with his core......."timing".......and he's got GREAT timing, but, OCCASIONALLY it will let him down and here comes the "2 way miss".......... IMOP
Crazy.... I started reading this topic w/o noticing the date and thought Slice was referring to his swing this week @ The Target. His swing looks scary good this week.
LOL........that one was from 06' Masters...........the first time I'd seen him NOT take the club "out,up, and around" (Haney trademark BTW)........and his SET UP angles were dead on........his PIVOT and backswing armswing looked MUCH better than the Harmon days (I just saw that he was DEFINITELY on the right track and even though I don't care for Haney, ya' gotta' give them their "due").........around this same time I predicated he'd EVENTUALLY get the club to "release" WITH his body rather than ACROSS his body and when he did, look out........@ Southern Hills we all saw things come together.......still a bit wishy-washy with the driver at times, but, I only see that when he either trys to B O M B it or hit a friggn' HOOK......when he sets up square to slighlty open with the driver he makes some beautiful swings.......that IS "his shot" with the driver.......he "owns" that one........it fits his game SO much better than his "technique" to hook it.......he can use his INCREDIBLE rotational body speed as an ADVANTAGE rather than as a detriment........when he trys to hook it he sets himself up "blocked out" to the target, tends to spin and sling........No matter, he's simply the best there has ever been........period........and when he finally truly "owns his swing" like that of Hogan/Moe Norman he's gonna' do tihngs that are even more incredible than what he's already accomplished....(he's JUST now entering his PRIME years.....which is a SCARY thought).......and what he's ALREADY accomplished is truly mind boggling IMOP.........
