2 Drivers

How bout Phil?
Im glad to see a pro doing it. I have been carrying 2 drivers for about 2 years now - dropped one of my fairway woods (sometimes drop the 4 iron depending on how many wedges im playing). Carrying 2 drivers is nice, IMO its nice to have another driver to go to in case your not hitting your first choice well. I can tell you that this system has saved a few rounds from getting ugly - IE staying under 90. Some days I can really get thru the ball, hence my stiff driver works and Im very long - in addition the regular flex will fade nicely. On the days that Im not getting thru the ball, I pull out the regular and hit it down the middle. Im sold on the two driver system. Besides as far as the ball flies now you can afford to drop a fairway wood or long iron - alot of par 5s I play on you can hit the green in two with a 6 iron- 4 wood (170-210yrd second shot) as long as your drives are 300+.

you hit 300 yard drives with a regular flex driver?

yeah - ive hit my stiff 380 and regularly hit a 9 iron second shot onto a 505 and 498 par 5s. Dont hate me b/c i bomb - and heres something else that may hurt ya - I just turned 40. I guess all those years of skiing paid off b/c i still got a little punch in me.

If it works then why not right? I mean many people carry 3-4 wedges. with a lot of people using hybrids these days it could def. free up some space for an extra driver or a wedge

Carrying more than PW/SW/LW is ridiculous in my opinion. There is absolutely no shot I cannot hit with my 48/54/60 setup. Besides, hitting touch shots around the green is all about feel and if you use fewer clubs, you'll be more comfortable with them when it counts - that's why Vijay only uses his 60* for all his bunker shots, so that there's consistency.

On the other hand, there are definitely a few shots with longer clubs that could use more options in the bag. I recently played in a tournament and had a 210yd shot over trees that I didn't have a club for - I was carrying a 20* utility iron, but it didn't get the ball high enough. On the other hand, a 5 wood would have been perfect.

Well why would you play a regular shafted one then? Also if you hit 380 yard drives you would put such a load on a regular shaft you wouldnt make contact. Cut the bs i was askin a question now everyone knows ur full of it

Edit by mod: We do NOT tolerate stuff like that here...

this is a post about hitting 2 drivers, not about how far anyone this it. I've played the 2 driver set up as well for a short time (G2 w/diamana 83, and r7tp tour with Shaqx) and the problem was I had no idea where either of them were going for the most part. but for someone with the control and skill that phil has, having 2 differetly weighted and shaft length could end up being a very vital tool, as phil showed us these past 2 weeks.

I play a regular flex driver & hit it 260ish. I hit my 9 iron 130ish. I must be missing something.

I think its a good idea with the two drivers. I might give it a try sometime. If it works for Phil it might not hurt some of use to try it.

Oh, and I told myself not to jump in on this part but I can't help myself. One thing I have learned on this site is that you can not let it bug you to much about how far people claim to hit the ball. They know if they are truthful or not. We have all heard the claims and take them as you will. I am a very long hitter myself but I do not pride myself on that at all. I have had a lot of people call BS when I state my yardage numbers but I don't let that bother me either. I try not to even mention them much anymore. I would much rather be able to hit a 100 yard shot dead stiff then the occassional 350yard+ drives that I hit. I hit my 9 iron for a 170 yard club alot but I would much rather hit it 130 yards stiff consistantly :stop: . Unfortunately, the swing that feel right to me does not allow that. Must be the old baseball player in me.

I play with my father-in law who is a short hitter and there are times that he is hitting a 4 iron where I hit a wedge. He is such a cool guy because he does not let that bother him. He is usually inside me anyway.
