Any feedback on low lofted Hybrids?

Was thinking about a 16* hybrid to replace a 3 Wood, any thoughts?

 

is it easy off the tee? fairway?

 

anyone go this route?

I really like my 16 Halo from the tee and the fairway, haven't had much succes with it out of the rough yet but that could just as easily be user error. For me the 16 is easier to hit from good fairway lies than low lofted faiway woods that I've tried (13, 14 & 15 degree), the shaft is shorter and the lie angle is more upright (nice for taller players and those with more upright swingplanes). The only downside I can think of is that I don't hit it quite as far as other 3 woods I've owned and lately I'm only hitting it about 10-15 yards longer than my 19 degree, I'd like a little larger distance gap for my long game. I'll shortly be experimenting with a new 17 degree 4 wood but if that club is harder to hit without much distance gain compared to my 16 degree Halo I'll definitely consider the newly released 14 degree Halo.

in my opinion, 16* is to high lofted to replace a 3-wood, plus the shaft is shorter. a 3-wood is typically 43" graphite and 42-1/2" steel, while a hybrid is in the area of 41-1/4" graphite and 40-1/2" steel. your giving up 1-3/4" to 2" and 1* of loft.

 

you probably hit the hybrid easier and more consistent because of the shorter shaft. a couple of options could be to look at a 14* hybrid (tm rescue dual tp) or look at a shorter shaft in your 3-wood.

 

i play steel in my woods because of the shorter length and heavier feel. you don't have to play your wood to the "typical" length, but to the length that is most comfortable for you.

 

i have the 14* tm rescue dual tp and its great. i got while having my great 3 wood shoot out (nike t-40 tour 15* vs. nike t-60 15* vs. tm v-steel 15* vs. tm rescue dual tp 14* - all with steel shafts). i was looking for something easier to hit than the t-40 tour. when i got the 3 other clubs, i noticed the t-60 and v-steel were the same length, but the t-40 tour i was having problems with was 1" longer (43-1/2" rifle 6.0 in a 3 wood). i cut it down to 42-1/2" like the others, and had the shoot out. the tm rescue dual, wasn't quite as long, but much more consistent and easier to hit. i don't carry it in the bag because i still find the v-steel, t-60 and t-40 tour longer and easy to hit.

Depends on the particular hybrid IMO. E.g. I played a 17* Sonartec MD which was very difficult to hit from the fairway...the 21* plays like a dream. Same with the TM Rescue TP. But this is coming from a guy who likes to hit a 13* 3-wood from the deck.

 

As for rough, its difficult for me to hit any low lofted hybrid from rough as the leading edge tends to get grabby. I've had better success out of rough with my V-steel 5-wood than my 19* Sonartec.

 

The point I'm drawing is that if you struggle hitting woods off the fairway don't expect miracles from a strong lofted hybrid IMHO.
