How much to tip?

Looking at a new set of irons. Currently play X100 standard lengths in my Titleist 680s. Driver swing speed 118-120. I'm really trying to lower my ball flight, so I'm thinking of going with S300s tipped. How much should I tip them to get them to play relatively close to standard X100s? How much lower a ball flight should I expect to see? Thanks.

I believe 680's are taper? Can't tip them unless you drill the hosel to 370. Even then, I don't think you have enough tip section to get S300 to X100. You could possibly hardstep the X100's once but will only net you a 1/4 flex stiffer.

 

In any case, anything you do with shaft is not going to affect ballflight near as much as swing changes. Guys that hit high have the ability to hit it lower....the reverse is not nearly as true. Good luck.

Thanks Dyno. Do most clubmakers use taper tips, or it that a Titleist thing? If I bought from a brand that uses parallel, I could then have them tipped, no? If that's the case, any idea how much to tip them (in inches) to get a stiff to play somewhere near an X stiff in terms of flex? Thanks in advance.
