On course golf strategies?

I know I should have started this sooner, but the last couple of seasons I have tried to focus on playing the course more than trying to hit driver / wedge on every hole. It has helped, but I still get to some holes and figure I can smack a nice drive and cut the corner which ends up hurting me just as much as helping.

 

This season I was thinking that would continue to "play" the course, but also focus on something else like the number of fairways that I hit per round or the number of greens in regulation. I figure, if I have a bad hole, it is better to focus on maiking sure I put my next tee shot in the fairway rather than making a birdie.

 

Would you agree? Is this more of a common sense thing?

I think that is a great strategy. A lot of players get "on tilt" after a poor hole and they try to follow it up with a miracle shot to make a birdie. I think a player who wants to shoot a successful score needs to set a game plan stick with it no matter what.

 

For me temptation comes into play a lot. I tell myself that I am going to hit a 2 iron off the tee on a particular hole (like a narrow par 4) and when I get there the driver starts calling out to me saying, "sand wedge into the green". You just have to tell yourself that your odds are better with the 2 iron and press on.
