Quick correction about Vij drooling over TM...his contract with Cleveland allows him to play any clubs he wants. Same deal Tiger has with Nike.

Rumor is that PM has a similar arrangement with Callaway except for that if he chooses to play another brand's club, he is obligated to work with Callaway's design team to create one he likes...if they can't deliver, he can play anything he chooses.

ANyone know the ball Freddie uses? B330's?

He could possibly be using a B330S but there is also a good chance that he could be using a tourstage like the V10. Tourstage is bridgestones higher end line in Japan. This also goes for his equipment at any given time he could be playing something by tourstage!! :stop:

This is from the Fred Couples web page that's just updated after the Masters 2006. I just don't know what they mean by saying "B330 prototype". To be released in May?? Or, does it refer to the B330Ss??

To answer the original question, is Freddy giving Bridgestone a great image, i say yes to that.

You have to remember that the only thing that Bridgestone is marketing so far are their BALLS. If you look at printed adds, all they are showing are their balls and none of their clubs. If you look closely at the images of the pros in their adds, only Appleby is the only one shown with a little glimpse of the J33 driver. The rest of the staff shows them without their clubs.

For some reason Bridgestone doesn't want to sell any of their clubs to the public. Don't get me wrong I own their J33 driver. I only say this because, none of the stores i go to in Southern Calif. carry any of their clubs (with an exception of their irons). I had to special order mine cause the shop said that they carry any of their clubs, but only golf balls. Why is this? I don't know. They do make great clubs, but they are just not pushing it to the public. You see more golf ball commercials than clubs on TV.

I think, Bridgestone is not going at it aggressively like the other OEMs.

As far as Freddy and Bridgestone, i think marketing wise it works out. Heck, it got me to think twice about trying their stuff. And i bought one...and it worked. BOOM BOOM BOOM..... you hear that all the time now.

X300's are XStiff just heavier about a 137 grams per shaft. Sort of like the comparison between S200 and S400. Freddy doesn't switch unless it feels right . It took Bridgestone and Freddy over a year and a hlf to get the irons right . They had 4 plus sets of custom grinds scrapped because they didn't feel right.

I know the tour rep for bridgestone and this is what he tells me couples is using:

R510TP--Speeder 757X

Callaway S2H2--UST IT X Flex (whatever that is)

Bridgestone Cavity Back Proto--2-PW (Since the Honda Classic)

Bridgestone J33 56 Degree SW (Bent Stonger I would bet)

Cleveland TA 588 60 degree

Bridgestone Tour B330 Golf Ball (Since the 2004 Skins Game--Same ball no new prototype)

I remember last year Couples played a set of Bridgestone irons for several months, so he has been supporting the Bridgestone brand for a while. He probably does not want to change drivers just like his 3 wood. Besides he may just not like the R7 series and wants to stick with what he likes.

  • 2 weeks later...
he also uses a Callaway S2H2 3 wood, doesnt show much for bridgestones woods

He uses stuff because it looks good to him. He used an old ram womens driver for years. Doesnt say anything bad about bridgestone woods just shows he doesnt play anything he is not familiar with or feels different. Im similar i like things a certain way and a little change here and there and i notice it and it distracts me. god bless lead tape is all i can say!

NEVER did he use a Ram driver...it was a Ram 3 wood that Tom Watson gave him several years ago.

The player giving Bridgestone the good image right now is Stuart Appleby. Couples may be popular, but he has problems finishing off tournaments and his game doesn't hold a candle to Appleby's right now !

This wasn't a thread to dispute one endorser vs. the other, but rather to comment on the fact that Fred's popularity is good for whomever he endorses; in this case Bridgestone. Appleby is in his prime and much younger...he shoud be playing better. :) However, I'd put Couples against ANYONE back in '91 and '92 when he was in his prime.

That is my feeling about it, as a OEM , having Freddy connected to you can not be a bad thing.

Even if he is not playing 100% of your line, name recognition can do a world of good for your bottom line.
