Cleveland Golf HIBORE Driver

The new Cleveland HIBORE driver is the ultimate high-launch/low-spin driver. Designed on a 520cc chassis, it features a unique crown geometry creating a center of gravity (CG) lower and deeper than ever before. What loft/shaft combos are people playing this in? In my 460 comp I play a 9.5 loft with an NV 65 stiff....felt like I would need to go up to 10.5 in the HiBore...has anyone else had a similar experience?

Been playing the R7-425 with stock REAX stiff ,10.5 and still had a lower than desired ball flight,,,but did get a lot of roll.

Switched to the Hi-Bore,V2 65 Stiff,10.5 and EUREKA!My search is over,,,perfect high ball flight,,ball hangs long ,,falls smooth and rolls,rolls,,bottom line???15-20 yds longer than any driver shaft combo I've tried,,,average swing speed,,93-98mph and today hitting into 20 mph wind had a 255 yarder,,OFF THE TOE!Hit a few 265-270 but wind was diagonal/behind.I have 4 different fujis in various heads and nothing has ever performed nor felt as good as this combo.

I finally picked one up and will be hitting it for the first time today at our 2:30 tee time. I will post comments on it as soon as I get a chance. I was hitting the Cleveland Comp 9.5 with Fujikura Vista tour series 60 in S flex.

The Hibore I have it in a 9.5 with Graffloy Pro launch so I ought to get a much higher ball flight. We'll see.

Well besides me hitting the ball like crap today, when I did hit the ball well it went a little further than my comp and surprisingly it didnt ballon or go to high like I originaly thought. As soon as I could figure out whats going on with my swing I will be smoking this puppy. Great driver!

My review is for a Hibore 10.5 with Grafalloy Prolaunch 65 stiff. Like some of you I thought this would be a high launch combo but for me is was not. The good is that this is the straightest driver I have ever hit with the ball not moving more than 5 yard left or right once the ball gets started. However, I found this combo to be 10-15 shorter on average than my 905R 11.5 with the V275 stiff. I just was not getting the carry with the Hibore I needed. I haven't given up hope though, as I have a 11.5 with the Prolaunch 65 stiff on the way and will give a review once I receive it. I was somewhat confused as what loft to get with this driver as many stated that additional loft would be needed due to the low spin(which may be the case) or than due to the high launch you could go down a loft. I of course found the opposite and did not find this to be a high launching driver.

If you look into other threads re the Hi-Bore I think you'll find the best shaft to use with this club is the V2-65,,,the pro launch with this head is probably the problem.

I have a 9.5* with V2 65 Stiff. I like this club, and I can really nail it. I'm not sure if it'll be in th bag all year, but it will be tough to replace.

 

I agree with above, the V2 is a great shaft in this club.

I picked up a 10.5 with the V2 Reg flex. (95 mph ss). I have been generally happy with it. great feel and distance when I hit it on center. If I hit high on the clubface, it skies the ball more so than any other driver I have had. Also have alot of vibration on mishits.

 

I tried one with the Grafalloy NT Comp shaft. Better feel and trajectory.

 

The jury is still out on my config. I may have it reshafted or sell it and go with something else.

 

Follow up to my previous post. I ditched my HiBore for a $70 used 983K w/Speeder shaft. Although the HiBore was directionally forgiving, hits high on the face caused excessive lost of distance. The 983K is slightly less forgiving, but is just as long.

Tested the hibore today. Not impressed. Not revolutionary as it looks, as long as my current 905R. It's just a matter of personal preference, all new drivers are good.

I am enjoying my Hi-bore, jury is still out as to whether it is staying in the bag. I do think it is the straightest driver I have ever hit. We give a more in depth review after some more testing.

First of all it's very unusual for me to give an opinion on any club. I go through a lot of club changes, sometimes for the better and sometimes just because I want to. If that makes any sense. With all the excitement about Hi Bore's being a failure in the thread in the Tour Section, I felt I needed to share my thoughts on this club.

 

Background of my drivers: I have played import drivers for the past year and a half. Mainly models from Tourstage. I have loved them all. Great solid hitting drivers, although possibly not the most forgiving out there on the market but it was my general preference. The last American OEM driver I used was a Tour Taylor Made R7 driver. It's still in my back-back-up bag and will probably never be sold.

 

Background of my playing ability. I carry a single digit handicap which to some may seem like no big deal, but I find it pretty good considering I put zero time in on the range and average about 6 rounds or golf per month. I have been as low as scratch during my tournament years, but hey...I'm old now and really with a job and regular life, golf is just a hobby. I'm a pretty big guy at 6'2"/235lbs and my driver swing speed is 115-120mph.

 

The Hi Bore..... I initially saw the Hi Bore at the Sony Open. I had seen the covers in the Cleveland Reps bag and when he went to the back room to do some adjustments, I followed him in. I asked him about the driver and he told me it was the newest thing that Cleveland had just made and was pretty unknown to the whole golf community. He told me Vijay was playing it at 47" and was killing the ball with it. I asked him to photograph the head and he asked me if I was planning on putting it on the net. I told him.."Of course! It's going to be on Golfwrx!". To which he replied..."Cool...go right ahead.". As I photographed the head, he told me "You do realize there are no pictures of this anywhere...not even on Clevelands website?". I told him "Of course..why do you think I want the pictures!". I posted the pics of the Hi Bore here at Golfwrx where they promptly caused some excitement on other websites. I apologize to those of you who got yourself a "vacation" for posting a link to Golfwrx...but hey...why would any site stop it's members from getting the hot news. :)

 

The Hi Bore was met with terribly mixed reviews from "I'd hit it" to "Who would want to play with that soup ladle?!". I myself was terribly intrigued by the club and of all American OEM's this was the club I wanted to try. The Cleveland rep at the Sony teased me with stories of penetrating ball flights and yards and yards. How could anyone pass up on this personal "infomercial"??!!

 

Well, the other week I decided to send my Tourstage X Drive to Joe Kwok to shaft it up with a Fujikura 660TR ....that I won for FREE here at Golfwrx for posting the pictures of the Sony Open. Don't you just love that....a free shaft for posting pics that would have just sat in your computer or camera's memory bank? Awesome stuff! Anyways...my X Drive which I had been very happy with was heading out to a REAL internet Club Guru and I was without a driver. I stopped by my favorite golf shop and found a beat up 9.5 Hi Bore. I looked at it and realized it only looked beat up and it was tee marks and ball marks all over the face and sole. Something that I could easily remove. I asked the shop guys about the Hi Bore compared to the 905R and they all told me that they were getting more 905R trade-ins and hardly any Hi Bore's were coming back. Well that was all I needed to know. I got the club for a steal and was on my way to my local club guru to have it reshafted.

 

My Hi Bore.....I had a UST V2 75gram X Shaft installed at 45.5" and at a weight of D4. No tipping was done, just cut to length.

 

Today I got to try out the Hi Bore for the first time. I got to the course early to get a few swings with it on the range before taking it on the course. I hit ten balls with it and left the range with a smile. I was hitting straight into the wind and the ball was boring right through it and landing on the far end of the range. I figured it was just a major case of "honeymoon" and was eager to get it out on the course.

 

The course I played today is rather short and I only needed to hit a driver on 10 holes. Of the ten holes, I hit 9 fairways. Again...possibly a honeymoon but I'll take 90% of my fairways on any day and any course.

 

Sound: I initially expected to get a "tinny" sound out of hit because that's what I'm used to from American OEM's. I got quite the opposite. In my opinion, the Hi Bore has a very solid sound, not quite the solid sound like from a Titleist, and definitely not like a Tourstage, but solid enough to feel like I wasn't going to cave in the face. I can't stand the high pitched "katingggs" that I hear from so many large headed clubs on the market. The Hi Bore had none of that.

 

Feel: The feel of the Hi Bore felt fantastic all across the face. I kept thinking while hitting it on the range and course, that if Cobra say's they've got sweet spots all over the faces of their drivers, the Hi Bore could say the same. I caught a drive on the heel and although I could feel I did, there wasn't that total miss feeling that I'd get off of a Tourstage driver. In fact my playing partners thought I had hit it solid but in fact I knew that I had heeled it.

 

Ball Flight: As I hit the Hi Bore, I kept getting reminded of my personal informercial with the Cleveland Tour Rep. I could hear his voice saying, "Get's up quick with a penetrating ball flight...yards..yards". The wind today was playing different from it normally does. On holes that I usually have a back wind, I was hitting into a heavy cross wind. Particulary on the 16th hole, a par 5, where I usually end up with about 235 to the green, today after a very solid hit, the ball seemed to carry through the wind like it wasn't there. I ended up with 215 to the green with a easy shot on in two putting for eagle. I'd give the tee placement ten of those extra yards, but the other ten has to be the Hi Bore. I easily carried corners that I usually don't dare to cut over because of my lack of confidence in getting my driver up in the air. My ball flight with the Hi Bore started off low and rised quickly to it's apex and just kept going.

 

At the end of today's round with the Hi Bore, I can honestly tell you that I was shocked. Physically it's not the most appealing club on the market. Especially comparing it to my Tourstage 435 which in my opinion is one of the prettiest clubs out there. The Hi Bore was everything a guy like me who doesn't put too much time in his game but expects the world from it could ask for. The sweetspot felt enormous. Now it could have been that I was just swinging well today. Though by the end of the round, I wasn't holding anything back on it. I was swinging for the fences and the ball was taking off from the face and bore-ing its way down the fairway.

 

I understand too well how honeymoon periods can be with all the club changes that I make. I know with my routine of playing golf, and not putting in practice time, all this could easily change tomorrow. But for now or at least till I get my X Drive back from being "Kwok-ed"....the Hi Bore has earned it's place in my bag. It's a very impressive driver and maybe not for everyone including Vijay and Tom's but it just might be for pitbull808. Go ahead and try it and decide for yourself how good/bad the Hi Bore is. :crazy:

Due to request for more follow up on the Hi Bore and X Driver comparison....here is the following information that I'd like to share.

 

Today I played 36 holes on a much tougher course then yesterday. Tougher in that it's longer and there are much more hazards for an errant drive to find. The results are that I'm still astonished about this driver. Those who know my game and taste know that the Hi Bore is very much the opposite of anything I'd usually purchase. I usually tend to go for something a much more classic looking and much more exclusive. My buddies in the chat room, Beruo, Mac, and a few others can attest that when ever I brought up purchasing a Hi Bore in the future, I was met with laughs and more then a few taunts and teasing.

 

The Hi Bore again performed perfectly for me today. My drives were not only long but accurate. I've played this course a lot in the last year and I haven't hit a driver this well in years on it. I was picking out my targets and nailing them. I had two toys on the course with me today. One my Swing Speed Radar and the other my Bushnell Yardage Pro. I brought them to see if I was imagining things or just swinging harder. I averaged between 109-118mph on my swing speed and my yardage was simply fantastic. Nothing extraordinary about the swing speed, but the yardage and accuracy was very appealing.

 

As for comparisions to the X Drive, this is where things become difficult. The X Drive 405 and 435, both of which I own in my opinion are very sexy looking drivers. (if drivers can be called sexy) The looks are classic ..also if you can call 405 and 435cc's classic....but the head shapes are. If I had the X Drives and Hi Bore's sitting next to each other and I had to choose one just upon the looks, the X Drives would win on every glance.

 

Sound-wise at impact the X Drivers would win in a landslide too. The X Drives give off a sound that in my opinion is more "wood like". I own and have used persimmons back when they were in vogue and the X Drives sound is much more reminiscent of that then the Hi Bore. The Hi Bore has a solid "thwack" but there is a tinge of metallic ping to it. Not loud like a Cobra or TM R7 with heavy weights in the head but probably closer to the middle of a 905R and a Mizuno MP001. Not muted, but also not loud.

 

Forgiveness, the X Drive 405 IMO..can not be called forgiving. In the Tourstage lineup, the X Series are for the better ball strikers. If you're looking for forgiveness in the Tourstage lineup, check out the ViQ line. The X Drive 405 is a very solid driver and but the sweetspot is only in the middle of the face. Mishits are penalizing. The 435 is much easier to hit then the 405 and IMO leaps and bound better in the forgiveness factor. The Hi Bore on the other hand IMO is all forgiveness. Sure, coming from a 405 and 435 can be more then enough reason to find the Hi Bore forgiving, but I've also played or hit a Miz MP001, Beres 911, TM R7, Cleveland 460 Launcher, TM R5, Ping G2/G5 and none of them had me gawking over them.

 

Honestly, one of the reason's I hate writing a review is that I go through to many clubs to really give my 2cents on anything. I change clubs like the weather. Many for good reasons, and many just because it's a day that ends in "y" and that means new club day. Some clubs are not for everyone and the Hi Bore like any other club can fit that catagory. I do suggest though, open your mind and take every review with a grain of salt and decide for yourself what you want to play. I don't sell Hi Bores, I also don't favor Cleveland clubs. I'll never be the one to tell you that a club is the end all of your searches, gets ten more yards and lastly the mythical "holy grail". That's a bunch of baloney that guys use to sell equipment. I like what ever works for me. At this time, the Hi Bore is working for me.

Over the past several years after my discovery of all these golf ho websites, swapping out drivers has become a weekly to bi weekly routine. It's pretty much try everything that comes to market. Most of my stuff is purchased on Ebay with a heavy emphasis on tour equipment. One can pretty much say that 99% of the quality stuff with various premium shafts have ventured into my bag and subsequently was sent back to cyberspace. It's not that they were bad clubs, but they all pretty much played the same. Different feel, slightly different launch angle, similar distances and of course the occasional dud. After reading all the hype about the Hi Bore, I knew it wouldn't be long before one was put into play. A quickk click of the mouse resulted in a 9.5*, the wet noodle shaft was pulled and a V2 75x untipped was installed at 45.5 inches. I guess great minds think alike :) Anyways, I played about 23 holes last weekend with this setup and man o man. What a club. What a piece of fine craftsmanship. What a club that has totally transformed my teeshot. My clubhead speeds hovers around 110 and for most of my golfing life, I've played the mid/low trajectory teeshot that carries a decent distance and runs like a hungry cheetah once it hits the ground. Well, not w/ this Hi Bore. This thing just goes straight up into the air on a 45* angle and just keeps on climbing. One gets very little ball movement due to the high launch so it's difficult to hit a snap hoook or a big slice. All misses were very playable and on my home course which plays very tight, I always had a shot to the green. If there was no wind or if it was slightly downwind, it was every bit as long as any of my past boomers. Due to the high ball flight, it was a little shorter into the wind. But what was mesmerizing about this club is that it just wants to go straight. The Hi Bore w/out a doubt is the straightest driver that I've ever played and it truly inspires confidence on every teeshot. It is a great feeling to stand on the tee and not have any fear of missing the fairway. Before I purchased this driver, their were 6 drivers in my stable. All of them are gone except for a Nike Ignite 460 w a Diamana x which will be a backup. I ordered another Hi Bore but with an 8.5* loft just to see what happens if I lower the trajectory a bit. The way this driver gets its distance is completely different that what I'm used to. I didn't like it at first as it was beyond anything I was expecting but the results speak for themselves. What an awesome club. My anticipation is to add about 10 yds by going to the 8.5 and perhaps I can be one of the throngs who will proclaim that this "is the longest driver I've ever hit." BTW, this is a claim I just don't make. But w/ a properly set up Hi Bore, I believe it is easily doable.

Hey....New TO GOLFWRX here...Great site! I am stationed at Misawa Air Base in Japan, so I do not have the chance to demo a club before I purchase one so I end up wasting alot of money. Before I get into the HiBore, I'll tell you a little about me and a few things that I have gone through to find the right driver.

 

My trend handicap is 29(Yes I know I suck...but I'm fairly new to golf). I tend to SLICE the ball but if I get a hold of one I can hit it 300yds but my average is about 270-280 hitting a fade. After seeing all the hype about the Nike SasQuatch, I had to get it...especially since TW was playing it. I bought it for $265 here with a 9.5 Stiff Stock shaft.....WHAT a mistake....I was on the Nike Bandwagon for about 5 minutes...It made my slice even worst that my original Wilson Staff DD5....but I knew it was my swing, so I worked on it and it and eventually got to hitting a fade to straight to hook back to slice to fade again. After getting my swing some what fixed, I just started to hate the NIKE SQ, it just felt poorly made and dinky even when I hit the sweet spot and still my Wilson Staff 10 deg stiff was out driving it by 10 yards, and the SQ was apparently the best driver? So I sold it and went back to the Wilson. When I was at the Range here a cool guy let me hit his Taylormade R7 425....great club, damn near perfect all my shots had a slight fade or were straight. So I decided to be cheap and buy the Adams 430Q (basically a wannabe R7) for $140 9.5 deg Adila NV 65 Stiff. After hitting it at the range for one day, I knew it wasn't the club for me. So the very next day I bought the Cleveland launcher Comp 9.5 deg Stock Stiff for $245 (I got 10% off) And boy was that a nice club when I hit it. It did seem to have an extremely high launch but I figure that it was from a steep swing maybe? About a week later I walked into the Pro Shop here and see this glowing in the corner.

I had to get it. After talking to the wife, and selling my Comp and 430Q, I was only $25 short, so she had no problem. I walked into the Pro Shop and they looked at me like an IDIOT for getting yet another Driver. I bought the 9.5 deg stiff UST V2.

After the purchase I headed to the range and 1 bucket of 25 balls.

 

Man was this club smokin....I hit all the balls either straight or slight fade and all as far as any other driver I hit (most likely will go further on the course due to the distance controlled balls at the range) This club is so easy to hit, and I think it must be super easy to release becuase I have never hit a bucket at the range like that. I know it's not a Honey moon Phase, because I have never had one with any driver. So the next day I went to the range again, and same reulst...except further and straight...hell I can even fade or hook the ball if I wanted. This club is so easy to control it's truely amazing and I know it will revolutionize my game!!!!! The true test is tmw when I'll play 2 rounds, so I'll be sure to let everyone know the results ASAP. But honestly, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS CLUB!!!!!

(In all fairness, I hit his Hibore at the range tonight and it felt decent, definitely better than the launcher. As far as aesthetics, it has really nice fit and finish. The matte shaft and head looks really nice. I didn't find the head shape too detracting when I set up to the ball. Ball flight was reasonable with the 9.5 degree loft, but flight limited balls make it difficult to see a comparable distance vs my Titleist 905S).

Alright...I played 3 rounds with the HiBore, and all I can say is it is an AWSOME driver...almost all my shots were in the firt cut or in the fairway.(yes there were some slices...but due to open shoulders) This driver has some booming distance when hit the way it's supposed to be hit, and yes I still highly reccomenfd this driver to anyone looking to get a new driver or add a little more forgiveness.

I bought the HiBore after getting fit on a launch moniter. I ditched my old cobra 460 for this club. I don't see much of a distance increse from my playing partners compared to my old cobra, maybe 5 yards, it's definatley not shorter. But for me, the accuracy shines through. I hit all the fairways I played the first day with it, and dead center every time.

 

I got this club with the aldilia nv 75 stiff, and it's the perfect shaft for me. Find yourself with the correct shaft and head, and then say hello to the short grass.

I have been thinking about this driver for last 2 weeks.

I am happy with my R7 425. Any advantages above the R7.

Do you think it will add more yardage?

I am pritty straight with my R7 except for occasional bizzare right fade.

Quick question here, and I know I might get a lot of conflicting answers, but oh well. The major problem with my driver now is that I hit it wayyy to high (10.5 Hogan CS3). Was wondering how the Hibore performed on terms of launch angle and spin. High an no roll? Low and lots of roll?

I have both the Hogan C-S3 12* Draw Reg and the High Bore 10.5* Fujikura. The Hogan ball flight is higher but this is an unfair comparison.

I just had the opportunity to hit the new High bore XL. Absolutely a fantastic club. 20 yrds longer than my Launcher Comp. It has that really loud breaking glass noise at impact which makes you feel like you've accomplished something. High Launch and a very high MOI. Cleveland has got another winner on their hands and there is no question this thing will hang w/ the boxes coming out in feb.

What else is there to be said about this driver? It's long, forgiving, and straight. I just got done playing and it by far was one of the best driving days that I have had in a long long time. The trick with this driver is to definitely get fitted other wise you will probably not be able to harness the potential of the HiBore. I am playing the 9.5* with the stock Fujikura and overall pretty impressed with the stock shaft. The ball flight is nice and higher but still get plenty of roll. Also the mis-hits are not has bad as they use to be. I traded in my G5 for the HiBore and I thought the G5 was a pretty forgiving driver...the HiBore will definitely be in the bag for a long time!
