New Clubs, New Season

Well I finally bit the bullet for the season and bought my clubs. I went into EJL Golf today in suburban Chicago and spent 2.5 hours testing and getting fitted for clubs. Though my swing isn't as consistent today as it will be later in the season I still decided that starting the season with new stix (current are 15+ yrs old) was better mentally for my game. I had lost confidence in my game with my old clubs (cept my wedges).

So here is what I ended up with after much testing:

10.5 HiBore w/NV65 S Flex

15 Launcher Steel w/NV75

22 Halo w/Rifle 5.5

Mizuno MP60 3-PW Forged w/Rifle 5.5

I already have the CG10 52, 56, and 60 for my wedges. I should have the stix by this coming weekend. Will report back after a few rounds and some range time how I like them. Even though I don't plan on having the 3i in my bag I wanted it in case my adaption to the Halo doesn't happen over night. This is my first attempt at a hybrid.

I definitely liked the Rifle shafts better than the DGS300 that come standard in most of the irons. I was close to picking up the Nike Slingshot Tour's but liked the topline and the confidence above the ball that the MP60's gave me. The statistics weren't that significant to make me go with the swoosh.

Yea, it's going to be quite a change going from the Head Premise borethrough irons to the Mizuno MP60's. The statistics showed that I had good numbers with the Premise but had already modified my swing to fit them. With the newer clubs it was a much easier fit and I didn't have to have my swing exacting. That forgiveness after many holes walking etc will be nice. The more tired I was in the fitting (2.5 hours) the harder it was to hit the older clubs.

I hope to have them this weekend for some range time and perhaps a short round, though with the holiday it will be hard.

How many people have modified the standard DG shafts in the MP60's to use Rifles instead? I'd be interested in seeing that stat. For me it was night and day difference in terms of side and backspin.

I was wondering how the Rifles would do in the MP60s -- sounds llike you like the combo. My concern is hitting the ball too high with the Rifles. How would describe this difference between the Rifles and the Dynamic Gold shafts -- is the Rifle flight considerable higher, close to the same, etc.? I"m alos thinking about trying the Nippon 1150s....I think that could be a great combo.

Great setup. My son and I are in the market for new sticks. Which suburb in Chicago is the golf shop you received your fitting? Do you think it is worth the travel from the city or do you have a recommendation in the downtown or surrounding area.

The company name is EJL Custom Golf and they have a website at http://www.ejlcustomgolf.com/ . They are located in Willowbrook IL and have a very nice facility. I definitely recommend them over Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith if your in the market to get clubs that fit you and yours swing. They use all of the tools of the trade to fit your clubs (launch monitor etc.) and you can credit some of the money from the fitting toward clubs if you decide to, but you don't have to. You walk away with some nice statistics on the clubs you hit and how you hit them as well which is nice. All of their pricing is inline with Edwin Watts so whatever you see there they have the same prices. They can give more details but I recommend at least taking a look at them when you get a chance. It's only about a 20-40 min drive from downtown and that depends on traffic really.
