Speed Stik, Momentus?

Obviously the best swing trainer is to hit range balls, but I need a more pratical and economical solution. How do you guys feel about the Speed Stik v. Momentus v. something else? Obviously increasing my swing speed would be great, but I'm also making serious swing changes and looking for something to help that along when I can't hit range balls.

I do own Speed Stik so I can say something about that.

 

First, it's as long as your driver, if not longer. If you want to buy it to practice indoor, keep that in mind.

Second, it might be able to increase your swing speed. However I would be surprise if your ss can not been increased by swinging a heavy stuff over and over again. Speed stik is just one of those heavy stuff.

Third, it can tell you the swing speed, that is a good point.

Fourth, you will get lots attentions in driving ranges or in golf courses. Someone will pretend to be familiar with you just for swining the stik for a while.

Fifth, for stance and posture, that's never the point of "speed" stik.

So...it will help increase my clubhead speed but probably not much use if I'm working to improve my swing?

No, remember it's called "Speed" stik. You have no way to know your swing is right or not.

I've tried the Speed Stick and I honestly think swinging a broom is equally as beneficial (if not better). A broom gives you input on face angle and gives you varying resistance during the swing. Try swinging one 20 times and see if you don't feel it. I also like the Ernie Els TempoTimer, which you can put on a club and hit balls. If you want to know how a shaft reacts during the swing hit some balls with this thing on - really flexes the shaft.

 

I find that heavy clubs (broom and TempoTimer included) can help with swing plane and tempo, especially if your swing is dominated by your arms - they almost force you to use your body. However, I wouldn't overdo it - you would be building tempo/timing for a club that is many times as heavy as your normal club - and it takes a while for me to get my timing back after using them.

I own a speed stik and I can honestly say I hate it. First of all you have to be careful that you don't flatten out your swing by working with it seeing you swing so far off the ground. The second thing I hate about it is it is shaped nothing like a golf club so it really doesn't have any practical purpose to me. You can achieve the same result by swinging a baseball bat, broom, or a weighted club. If you are just buying it because it has a speed gauge you are going to be let down because it isn't even close to accurate. I can get mine to read 118 mph and I know from launch monitor fittings that I can only swing from 105 to 108. Instead of wasting $100 on the speed stik invest the money towards some golf lessons or find a real training aid. I could suggest a couple of good ones that I use and like but I don't know what you are trying to work on with your swing.

I've had the heavy tour weight iron version of the Momentus for three years and I really like it. As another post said it is a bit tough to find your tempo again with a normal weight club after using a really heavy club too much. Swinging this club 20-30 times before a round really helps me loosen up my shoulder and back muscles and when I switch over to swinging a regular club I love how light the club feels and how strong I feel, exactly the same feel that taking the donut off of a bat before stepping into the box felt when I played baseball. I believe the club is helpful with swingpath and golf specific muscles, but the most noticable effect for me is in my hands and wrists. I bought one without the grip trainer (just a regular skinny wrap) and spending 10-15 minutes at least a few times a week has definitely improved my hand/wrist strength. I recently noticed a really short version of the Momentus iron that would be excellent indoors and I'll probably pick one up. I would imagine that someone who is a bit handy or works on their own clubs could assemble a heavy club that would have the exact same benefits as the Mometus without having to spend $70-$100.

You must be very careful with the Speed Stik. The reason why is so that you won't flip, in an effort to generate more speed. I have "flipped" and gotten the swing speed up to 125, which is 10 above my norm. So with the speed stik, you must work on good mechanicks, especailly at impact.
