Recommend cheap 5 wood

Yellow Jacket

Can be discontinued model
I'm looking for a 5 wood to replace the Burner you see in my sig. The 3 shots that I can imagine using it would be:
1) approach shot on par 5 and over trees on long par 4, and tee shot on long par 3 (should be easy to hit off deck and tee)
2) ball in rough (should have reasonably deep face and glide through grass)
3) ball in divot/crap lie (should have low COG and a sole that will let me get in there)

1) and 2) and pretty much covered by most 5 woods, but 3) will only be covered if the head isnt too deep from front to back. I'm open to the idea of a hybrid but it seems hybrids are more long iron replacements than for the shots I described. Oh, and a closed face a la Steelhead III will destroy me.

Well if you like your T60 3 wood I would consider the T60 5 wood. You can get them used cheap on ebay or buy them brand new for $80 shipped. I love the T60 3 wood and 5 wood even though I replaced the T60 5 wood with the new Nike Slingshot Tour 18* hybrid. They are a nice hybrid that I feel plays quite simular to the 5 wood.

The 3 that immediately came to mind were the T60, Launcher, and Trimetal - hopefully someone can talk about the Launcher, but I don't know if the Trimetal is too shallow-faced.

i'd throw the t-60 and v-steel out there for fairway woods. i like the taylormade rescue dual tp (less offset, not draw bias) 19* for a hybrid recommendation. the slingshot tour looks real good, but haven't tried it yet.

When I was looking at a V-Steel for a 3 wood, I hated how it felt and it felt really heavy, even though the swingweight is only D2. The Rescue Dual is too expensive. The Slingshot tour does look awesome, but I'm afraid it won't go high enough.

I don't know about the more expensive fairway woods, but I agree with previous poster ... the V-steel and the T-60 are always the most talked about performance and durability wise.

Most of the comments I see are in regards to them as a 3 wood, not 5 wood.

Adams' upside down fairway might be a choice for (3). You can get old models on ebay is less than 50 bucks, I guess.

But what about 1) and 2)? :stop:

personally, I'd check out the old nike t40 tours, they're great and I've been seeing them near new for like 40 bucks recently. I actually just bought one and so far it's been great to me. A buddy of mine had the t60 and loves it in the 5 wood, both great clubs.

i'll back up the t-40 tour as well. this is my 5-wood, when i carry a 5-wood. didn't mention it because i wasn't sure if you can still find them on ebay. you still get the ball up with this, but its not as high as the t-60 5-wood. much shawoller face than the t-60. i've heard a number of people, including myself, complain how the t-40 tours varied in feel between the different heads, but the 5-wood was the best feel of the 4 woods.

The T40 looks very bad to me at address. As for the T60, I have a concern with the sole - it's very curved a la 980F.

I was going to suggest the V steel but then I read the thread. Have you tried a Mizuno MP001?

I have not. The club looks fine, but what's so great about it?

Give a the Trimetal+ in the 18* - 20* range a shot. Slightly deeper face than the original Trimetals but still get the ball up from the turf. Came stock with the EI-70 shaft. You should be able to pick one up for about $25-$30. Now go search the used bins!

I second the Orlimars, still some one of the best fairway woods out there. "+" model has deep face, and non + has shallow face.

Here's a question I forgot the ask...should I get a 17* or a 19*? I have a 13* 3 wood, so does that mean I should get a 17* 5 wood, when in fact it's a 4 wood loft?

well, your carrying a 2 iron which means a 19* wood would be fairly close to your 2 iron. you could be better off with the 17*. the gap won't be so large between the 13* and 17* and the gap won't be so small between the 17* and 2-iron.

A distance gap isn't as important as a trajectoy gap in which case there is little difference between my 2i and 3i. However, if I carried a 3i instead of 2i, would you suggest the 19*? I could swap the two if it meant a more balanced set.

I'll second the t40. I just picked one up at 2nd Swing for $45 brand new. I was going to get the t60 but I used to have an old t40 3wood and loved it so I thought for the price it was better to go with the t40.

I would like to third the T40 5-wood. I have the OS version, but I think Tour version just has slimer and square face. I have been looking for the Tour version but could not find one for cheap... I see them time to time on ebay, but the price reaches $100+!!! so I don't think ebay is a good place to look for T40s.

To those of you who bought T40 for cheap, where did you get it??? There are no 2nd Swing stores in California T-T. I checked out other used club places, but no T40s... if you know any internet stores (or yourself) that still carry T40 Tour 5-wood, please let me know. Thanks.

What's wrong the the T60, especially if it has a heavier weight?

its all preference what yardage you need to fill a gap. the 19* would be good with a 3 iron in the bag, but it does leave a gap between your 13* wood and your 19* wood. you just need to decide what gap you are trying to fill.

why would you want a t-60 5-wood? tiger doesn't even use it. he prefers the t-40 tour.

just kidding around

the t-60 is deeper face, but does have more weight in the sole to get the ball up quicker and easier. the t-40 has weight in the sole too, just not as much so its going to be a lower trajectory.
