D2 custom order, but D0 received. Mistake, or...?

Recommended Posts

I just custom ordered a set of Callaway X-tour irons 1/4" short, with a project-X 5.5 shaft, and a D2 swingweight. Now I realize that the shorter and lighter shaft would reduce the swingweight, which it did, but I thought Callaway would put a slightly heavier head in to compensate and bring the SW back up to D2. I tested all the clubs and they all came in at D0. I was told by Titleist that their wedges can be made 1-2 points lighter or heavier by different weight heads.

The salesperson will call Callaway tomorrow, but I thought someone might have experience with this. I want to know if Callaway simply missed the D2 detail, or if it is not possible given the parameters I gave them.

My last set was a D3 so I'm not sure if I will like D0, especially since mens standard is D2. Could D0 mean more clubhead speed or simply a lighter feel.

First, I would request aredo and get them changed to D2, this can be easliy done with 2 grams of weight. Callaway should have done that the first time around. If tyhey get back to you and tell you that they can not make them D2 for what ever reason, I would tell them you want your money back and go with something else.

Question two, would reduced swing weight of going D3 to D0 would increase swing speed, no, 2.5 grams of club head weight would not change speed.

Thanks, I'll make sure they get to D2. Originally the salesperson said every company measures swingweight differently??? I have my own machine to measure it, and it is a standard measure.

The plate seems easy enough. With regular heads the company's must have different weighted heads to increase/decrease the swingweight to requested levels?

Funny this thread comes up. I requested my i5's be D2 and they came D0. I'm still messing around to see if it's worth sending them back. For the i5's it would be a heck of alot more than just changing a medallion. What's funny is they said they may not be able to get my 58* to D6 yet it came out that way.

I have a set of cally x tours that I am now selling. I ordered them +1/4 inch and D2. They came in at around D5!! All I did was remove the badges (which are used for swingweighting only and are quite different in weight). This took them down to around D0, and I then used thin lead tape in the cavity to balance them all at D2.

I think it is a shame that Callaway can charge 1000 dollars for a set of forged irons which then need as much as 7 grams of weight to balance them from club to club (8 iron was around D2 with no weight, while 5 iron needed 6 grams of lead tape!). What does that say about their manufacturing tolerances? Especially when Miura cost about the same and are less than 1 gram from perfect direct in the box with no tweaking!

Not at all impressed after an initial honeymoon. Going to MP60s this year once these are sold. Anyone interested in buying the callys can contact me. They are like new and only saw 4 rounds, being cleaned after each. Will sell for fair price.

Interesting note about the manufacturing tolerances. I did not mention it before but the 7 iron head came right off the shaft in my hand. It had not been glued properly, or even t all!

Initially yesterday the salesperson told me that Cally cannot "guarantee" swingweights. I told him since I am not a touring pro I would not ecpect "exact" swingweights, but I could give or take 1/2 to 1 point either way. But the whole set was D0 (one was C9), and that was not acceptable. He called Cally and spoke to the customs dept., and the man there said he could do "some things" to get them close to D2. Wow now there's a confidence booster.

As I'm also customing ordering an FT-3 driver, I've already said it has to come in between D2-D3 or its going back. Funny I've heard that Titleist can be tough to deal with. I custom ordered a spin wedge last year, middle of the summer, and it came exactly as ordered, 2 points light to D3 and 2 degrees flat, and was returned in only 3 days.

Maybe with Cally I should order under the initials "P.M".

I ordered a set of Ping G2s last year, 1/2" short with DGSL shafts, and requested D2 swingweight. The WRX department said that was not possible, and I believe they said D0 was the max for that combo.

Sold those quick, BTW :)

Just got a set of Titleist 695MBs with Project X 5.5, requesting D2 - D3. They said "D2", and all but one iron is D2. I think the 6 iron is D1.5

oem's are notorious for this...my buddy ordered some ping's d2 that came out c9...seriously.....c9

That's hardly a surprise, as C9 has always been Ping's standard swingweight. I think the S59s might be D1, but their 'game improvement' irons have always been around C9. Karsten believed this would benefit the average golfer, and it's often the thing about Pings that 'non-Ping' golfers don't like...

I think most of Jack Nicklaus' MacGregor irons were around C9 as well - can anyone confirm this? I have Muirfields, which are quite light, but they're stored away, and I don't want to drag them out to weigh them...

Going to MP60s this year once these are sold.

Mizuno is even worse. I used to work in a large golf retail store and we had a lot of Mizuno stock. I ordered a set of MP 32s at D2. When they arrived, the SWs were all over the place. I pulled every set we had in stock to try and find a set that was right. Out of 8 sets. none were dead on. Some were a long way off. The worst club seems to be the 6 iron. They are always off on Mizuno irons. Please don't take this as knocking Mizuno. I play MP 60s myself. I just had to pull the heads and tip weight them to get them right. Same as my MP 32s...

After I get anything equipment I always check the specs myself, expecially when I get something off the tour van. There is simply so many players that request stuff at every event & the guys on the van just wanna pump it out to get it in our hands. So most of the time stuff is a bit all over the place, but were not Tiger & neither am I so I can understand that they'd be there all day to make sure everything was perfect. But coming as a custom order they make you wait so damn long to begin with, how do they not get it right, & how can they not make a set of irons D2? I doubt theres many guys out there playing D0.

My i5's were ordered as D2 but came in as D0. Sending them back to Ping to get it right.

swingweight is a common measure. that bit about every company does it different is pure bs and makes the person who said it suspect in everything he says. different makes of swingweight scales may yield slightly different results ... but, we're talking maybe a 1/2 point, certainly not 2 points.

make them do it again and express your displeasure at their failure to get it right.

It boils down in the company not delivering what the customer ordered. <------PERIOD! It doesn't matter if he was a vertically challenged human being and wanted his irons an 1" over with 4 wraps on the grip. The company took his money and did NOT deliver as promised. (sidenote The Daly Planet, JD says "When you get clubs get fitted")

It seems that nobody takes pride in their work product and that is from the Burger Stand to the Gas Station. If I order a "Double/Double Animal Style" and pay the guy/gal that is what I expect to receive. It really isn't brain surgery is it? What does it matter what his wrist to his shoes measurement is while wearing street shoes?

If the company cannot fill the order then they should tell him that and not accept his money. For any company that says it is within their tolerances then that is a "cop-out" plain and simple. Customer Service is at an all time low in not only golf equipment but everything.

To me the proper procedure for custom orders should for the store to verify first with the manufacturer if the request is possible before the order goes out. If it is not possible then they could at least offer other alternatives, or at the very least say it is not possible. Although the store I am dealing with is good for returns, the salesperson has tried twice to settle me into the D0 order, and has lost credibility in the process.

This is much to common in business, and I would hope more consumers would stand up against it where possible. Think of how impressed I would have been had the salesperson said lets make sure the order is right instead of sending me on my way without even opening the box. Unfortunately that would be the exception in today's sales environment and not the rule.

So do all companies carry different weight heads in their irons like Titleist does with their wedges? With many different shaft options available in many different weights, they would either have to have different weight heads or weight the shaft with plugs, etc.. to get the stated swingweight if they really had to.

As for "Peglegs" question about Jack's Muirfields being C9, I can add that I have a top of the line set of Wilson X-31 plus from 1975 and they are about C9, and due mainly to the fact that they are approx. 3/4" shorter on each club than today's clubs.
