Proper Breathing Techniques

what should it be?

I have noticed that when I hit the ball I hold my breath through impact. I'm not at all tense and it feels natural to me but I am afraid I will get a hernia or something. Is there a breathing pattern a player should use when hitting a ball or is it anything goes? Thanks in advance.

NEVER thought about it during the swing.......LOL......

 

However, I was taught a great pre-shot "relaxation" technique by Chuck Hogan...

 

Suck in as much air through your NOSE as you can into your lungs.....

 

Hold it for an 8 count......

 

Then release the air through your mouth as SLOOOOOWLY as you possibly can........

 

Works wonder to reduce stress/anxiety......and you can use em' off the golf course to keep from killin' your kids/wife or the dog.......:stop: :D

Funny question...I always used that as a match play technique. Ask the other player if he inhales or exhales on his downswing. He'll be hitting it loose the rest of the day. :stop:

 

Seriously, not something I've ever thought of....I guess if you think of it like Karate or weight lifting...you're supposed to exhale as you strike your opponent....maybe you can let out a loud "hi-ya" as you strike the ball and see if it works.

 

Let us all know if it does....that might be one of the secrets that Ben Hogan took to the grave. :D

Maybe I'll just start grunting every time I hit the ball. I could be like that first guy to ever grunt in tennis. :stop:

 

Side note: I have heard of that breathing technique before and it works great, lightning fast stress reliever.

just after i am finished waggling the club i set it up beside the ball, breathe out slowly

then backswing-breath in

downswing-starting to breathe out.

 

works great if tensing up makes you hook etc.

 

read about this in a golf magazine that said bernahrd langer uses it.

One of the instructors I see is ADAMANT that you should always be breathing OUT during the entire swing, with the final outbreath at impact. Seems towork well for me.

I would assume exhale on the downswing. But honestly, its all over so quickly I would be surprised if I actually got a full breath in.

I don't think you'll be the first. when I was @ the range during the local qualifier for the LDA competition there was a LOT of grunting. Honest to god, it sounded more like football or hockey!!! :wave:

Just keep breathing in and out. Has worked for me since birth.
