Hybrid Suggestions

Fairly Cheap for a beginner

Hey Guys,
I'd love to get out and try some out, but I haven't seen anywhere to Demo the clubs yet. I'm still relatively new to the game and have heard a Hybrid is easier to hit than a long iron. What are some cheap, fogiving irons that I should look into? I've seen the Nike CPR's onsale at Golf Town for relatively cheap ($100CAD) and the Pro Combo hybrids on E-bay are relatively inexpensive as well. I'd prefer to keep my costs down, but if you feel a hybrid is exceptionally forgiving and good for a beginner please mention it as well. If anyone knows how I can track down a demo session (as I'd like to try out some other clubs as well), or where I should be checking, that information would be greatly appreciated.

To start, you don't have to spend a ton on these. A lot of companies make good ones that don't cost a mint. If you are talking price, no one can beat Tour Edge. I own two of their hybrids (Bazooka Jmax). They are extremely easy to hit and they only cost me $70 each, fitted. If you want a bigger manufactuer, Cleveland's HALO is outstanding. The Nike CPR is very good. Even the Cobra Baffler is a solid one. These are clearly easier to hit than a 3 or 4 iron. Some guys I know carry one to replace a 5 iron as well. I recommend nothing less than 22 degrees to start. See how you like it. That should fall into the 3/4 iron range nicely.

There is a UK based manufacturer called MD Golf, I don;t know if you guys get their clubs in the USA but they are becoming very popular here because of the quality of their clubs and the budget prices.

They do an "Equaliser" rescue club which comes with grafalloy pro launch shaft as stock and they are only about £70 brand new (about £140 CAD or $120 US).

To find a demo day go to the OEM websites, most of them have links to demo day scheduling and you can search for nearby ones via zip code, city, state or province. You can also just call nearby stores, courses, and ranges to ask whether they've got any scheduled and who the manufacturers are.

Hey if you want to spend less than $100 than head to your nearest Golf Town (I go to Ancaster) and give the Nickent 3DX a whirl. When I got mine a couple of months ago the steel shafted was $99 (I bought the steel) it comes with a True Temper ST-90 shaft or graphite with the Aldila shaft was $128. Give Tour Edge a shot as well, at the golf show I hit it and didn't care for it too much. I'm glad that I bought the Nickent.

Thanks alot for the help guys. I took a few clubs into the testing room today. They were out of the CPR in a loft and style I was looking for, but took the Bazooka and Nickent Gen-X into the booth and hit about a dozen of each. I felt more comfortable with the Bazooka and the distance and accuracy was better. It was also nice to see my Swing speed (105MPH) and Launch angle (13) for these. I ended up getting the Tour Edge Bazooka #4 Ironwood which is 24*, steel shaft, regular flex. Thanks for the help everyone.

Update: Took it out today, hit it 4 times and all of them were bombs, long and straight (by my standards at least, but it's all relative). I've NEVER hit a good 3 or 4 iron on a course. I didn't miss today. Conditions were bad, and I still seemed to connect alot. Obviously I had lady luck on my side, but I feel more confident with the club and it is easier to hit. I'd definately suggest it.

Man, I had the 3 and 4 Bazooka hybrids (came with my irons) and did not like them at all compared to the Nike CPRs I already had. Granted I only hit them a few times (didn't want to mark them up too much before trading them in) but they did not go anywhere near as straight or as high as my Nikes. Perhaps I am just used to the CPRs but I think the wood-styled Nikes are better for beginners. Rockbottomgolf.com has them pretty cheap now too.
