Increasing the Swing Weight...

Raise or Lower Trajectory???

Hey Guys I just had a quick question, I did a search but came up with nothing. I was just curious because i want to increase the swing weight in my I5 irons but I am having a little brain fart so to speak. I cant remember if it will lower or raise my trajectory? Any help will be great guys!

I will go the other way with higher. Adding weight can increase the amount of flex in the shaft that you are using and can result in adding loft to the head at impact.

I will not swear to this, but I have seen this affect in both a driver and a set of irons.

Many forces in play here, and I am sure the variables are too many to put down a for sure answer.

Need input from a Joe KWok or another daily fitting specialist. Not many people are fitted for swing weight, but I am sure some fitting expert out there has been down this road.

Yea I just cant put my finger on it as well... I have gotten about 3 pm's some say higher some say lower... Hopefully Joe can help us out here. I will be going from a D-0 to a D-2 or 3 so Im not changing it drastically but I think its a signifigant change to where it might affect ball flight.

That's what I think as well.

I don't think you can add enough weight in a concentrated enough fashion to either raise or lower ball flight (or draw or fade it for that matter).

Those last two posts were exactly what I was wanting to hear. I love the way the balls comes off of my irons and was hoping that changing the swingweight wouldnt change the trajectory. Now I just have to come to terms with not having my irons for about a week and a half :).

I want to change them because it is hard for me to feel where the club head is. On my last two sets of irons I had a swing weight of D-3 and I could feel exactly where I was stopping in the backswing as well as feel the club head in my hands. With these it feels like I am whipping the club around. I noticed that my tempo has gone up since using these irons and i want to get it back to where it was, so I figured going back to what I know is probably the best way to do it. I just wasn't sure what was going to change along with the swingweight. Now that you guys have told me that any changes will most likely not be noticable, I feel more comfortable making the change.

One factor that you might consider is where you add weight to increase the swingweight. Not factoring in shaft flex and how the increased SW will affect your swing (steeper vs shallower) a change in the COG will affect ball flight. Raised COG (lead tape high on the back of the club) should lower spin and should give you lower launch and a more penetrating ball flight. If you lower the COG (lead tape near sole of club), you'll effect a higher spinning higher launching ball flight. jat

Matt, that's the perfect reaason to change swing weight. SW plays a huge role in feel and tempo. Hope everything works out well for you!

Lead tape is great for swingweighting pruposes, but isn't enough to accomplish COG changes enough to affect ball flight.

A 5 gram tip weight only moves the COG .15" towards the heel of the club. 5g is a heck of a lot of lead tape and it's no where near as concentrated as a tip weight. . .

Hey TMFan I really appreciate your help with this topic. Your posts as well as others are always so helpful and mature here which is why I LOVE logging to this site.

Beruo, The nice thing about the I5 irons is that they remove the ping CTP (custom tuning port) on teh back of the iron and replace it with a heavier CTP. So I would assume the COG would remain similar to where it is now. Also its nice that I wont have a bunch of tungsten powder down my shaft because as I have seen before in some putters (Im not sure if its similar in irons but in putters its true) it lags the heel of the club and tends to leave the club face open.
