new iron set length?

Just got some new irons and was wondering if I should keep it standard length or chop it down about half an inch to fit my 5ft 6inch frame?

I'm your same height and I play my irons -1/2" (according to Titleist) 37.5" 5 iron gripped.

 

Since doing so I've noticed an INCREASE in distance because I make much better contact and compress the ball much better. My misses aren't as bad, and the biggest benefit - it's all but eliminated that giant miss that seemed to creep its head up once or twice a round and lead to a double or triple bogey (knock on wood).

 

Jack Nicklaus never hit an iron longer than 38.5" (I believe) and he played a 1 iron. Just some food for thought for those that will tell you that by cutting down your irons you will lose distance. The loft of your club and contact play a bigger role in determining the distance you hit your clubs.

 

Also, remember that by cutting your irons down 1/2" you will lose swing weight (3 points) and may have to get the lies readjusted since they will effectively play 1* flatter. Get to a good clubfitter to make sure everything's back in place if you do cut them down.

The shop told me that standard length was ok for me and a local place that does the diagnostic fitting charges $280 for a 2.5 hour session. Was wondering if shortening my irons would be the logical thing to do since standard length is for the average height closer to 6ft rather than 5ft 6inch.

Try it yourself. Take a piece of 1/2 masking tape and mask off the butt end of your grip on all your irons. Don't grip above that line, play with them for a round and see what you think.

 

If you like it, take off the grips (with an air compressor or some solvent and a needle you can save the old ones) and chop off some length off your irons. Add 6 grams of weight to the clubhead and you're back to normal.

I think standard lengths have increase to fool the consumer to thinking he is hitting the ball longer.. well I guess that is true in many ways.....irons are longer, jacked up lofts..driver shafts are longer, etc etc..

 

my current 5I is 37.5 and lofts based of a 49* PW... I hit these are far as anything.

just cut down my titleist 690.mbs yesterday and fitted them with muticompound grips from golfpride went out today and shot 72 didnt lose any distance actually thought i had gained 5 yards i cut them down because my old set of wilson staff blades were at least 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch shorter and i have always felt a lot more suited to this length and i am also 5ft 6 i also have these 1 degree flat and these now feel perfect.

why not choke up like Anthony Kim. I am 6 ft, slight above standard length. I went plus
a half inch and I love it. Full control.
