How Is It Done And Are There Any Side Effects etc.

Sorry, I'm just playing a year now and i was wondering what softstepping a shaft is. i think that you soften the shaft but i need to find out

1) How is it done
2) Are There Any Side Effects From It i.e. if you trim a shaft it gts stiffer
3) Does It Cost Much
4) How Long Does It Take

1. Softstepping is taking a shaft that's one longer than intended in taperl tip shafts (which can't be tipped). You'd take a 3 iron shaft and put it in a 4 iron head, a 4iron shaft into the 5 iron head and so on. This does not change the dynamic flex of the shaft, but it makes the shaft "feel" softer. Great for people who are inbetween an R and S flex shafts. You can do it once (3 iron shaft in 4 head) or twice (3 iron shaft in 5 iron head) if you want it to play even softer. Then you butt trim to proper length.

 

2. No side effects other than softer feel, ball flight will remain the same since you're not affecting the bend profile.

 

3. It should cost hte same as long as you go to a compotent clubmaker since the same amount of material is used.

 

4. Same amount of time as a standard reshaft, again provided your clubmaker is compotent.

The reason the shaft feels softer is that you're using a shaft with a longer tip section in a heavier head. Take a shaft that's .355 taper tipped and compare the 3, 4, and 5 irons. Notice how the tip is longest in the 3 iron and shortest in the 5 iron? If you put a 3 iron shaft with a longer tip in a heavier 5 iron head, it will play softer.

 

Length can be as short or long as you want it to be. This is because you can butt trim steel shafts quite a ways without changing flex. The butt section is just a handle, it can be trimmed as much as neccesary.
