I am a one handicap but have never wanted to play "player's" irons. I want forgiveness, a big clubhead, something I can hit in my sleep. I don't have a problem working clubs that are not players irons however I do not like a lot of offset in the irons. Annika uses x-18's (too much offset) Billy Mayfair uses 804's by Titleist ( too much offset) . They are great players who are playing non-traditional "player's clubs"( and they are a hell of a lot better then me!) So here is my question. In your opinion what irons would you recommend for someone who can play but does not want to use a "player's" iron. Too much offset is what turns me away from a lot of decent irons like the i5 and some of the Taylormade irons. A few irons that I am considering are the x-tour, new hogan edge and possibly the cg4 tour however I have not seen it . Would appreciate any suggestions. The bigger, the easier to hit, the better for me anyways..... Anything out there I am missing???

X-18 Pros are a good one to look into...........

 

Forgiving for a Calloway and in my opinion better than the X-Tours but have less offset than the Stock X-18's

What about X tours, X18 Pro series, Mizzy MX-23, Titleist 704's, Cleveland CG4 tours, Nike NDS.

All have a good cavity for some forgivness, but none have too much offset. The most Offset is probably in the MX23s of the ones I listed

How about taylor made rac forged tp. Although personally I don't like the feel.

this may sound kinda dumb but the Tommy Armour 845C forged cavities are very forgiving!!! Plus on ebay theyre going for like 150 brand new(thats what i got mine for) its a mid to oversized head that is forged and has great feel...these are also some of the most forgiving irons that ive ever played and easily the most forgiving forging i've hit

 

I will second the Tommy Armour 845C Forged iron. A ultra forgiving iron in players clothing. I purchased a set off eBay for my father and reshafted them with some Exsar regualr Graphite shafts, and he loves them. Hardly any offset, low center of gravity, topline as thin as a blade, workable, and extremely forgiving.

How about the Ping I3+ blade model? Ping still makes them, and some stores still have leftover sets for $500-$600.

If you're thinking used I absolutely loved the Cally X-14 pro's, I'm still not sure why I gave mine up after 4 years of excellent service. They are very forgiving and have minimal offset in the long irons, I would imagine that Callaway didn't make them perform worse with the X-16 and X-18 pro series but I haven't hit either.

Most Nike clubs have very little offset. The Slingshots have less than the RAC LT2s, and the Slingshot Tours even less.

The Nike Slingshot Tours sound like the ideal club for you. Try em, you might be pleasantly surprised. I know I was.

My sugestion is the Taylor Made LTs, and the PING S59.

 

Take a demo set out to a course for a round for whatever set you are thinking about.

 

My S59s feel very similar to my old PING ISIs (better even) without all of the offset. Not quite as forgiving, but more so than other players irons I have tried. I never played the I3s. Give the S59s a test ride. I love them.

if you have some extra money, you can custom order some mizuno mp27's with no offset (they are sort of like the japanese version of the mx23s) or you order gfield nc1's which come with no offset.

CG2 is not hard to play. It still got forgiveness. Less offset than CG4 Tour.

 

My old iron set is Adams A1 Pro. They are easy to shot and the offset is really little. I just don't like the faaaaat soles. You can get one on ebay around 150 for old or 200 for new, at most.

Macgregor M685! Seriously, check them out. Very clean looking yet easy to hit

 

 

Along the same line the Macgregor M 565 is a great set of sticks. Its a little more game improvement then some of the other clubs but they are forged. I've only played 3 rounds and can't move the ball left to right as well as I could with my S59's but my GIR has improved dramatically. Plus last week at the range I started to see the begining of little draws and fades on command

I saw a used set of these in Golfsmith the other day for like $900 freaking dollars. Zero offset cavity backs. I'd have bought them if they were about $500 cheaper.

I went to www.DiscountDansGolf.com and ordered a set of Cleveland CG-4Tours and they arrived from Ca. to me here in Flori-Duh in 8 days. That is with Dynamic Gold SuperLight shafts and bent 2º-ƒlat. Oh and they were $200+ more cheaper!!! I also received follow-up phone calls, follow-up e-mails, a hard copy receipt of the credit card and a hand written Thank You from Dan himself...

 

I got rid of my Nike Slingshot Tours after using them for 3 rounds. I found the sole too large for the fairway/roughs of Flori-Duh, plus these feel like butter compared to margarine...

Another vote for the Armour 845 forged series. Ridiculously easy to hit but sets up traditionally and feels great. Plus, they're dirt cheep.
