If you had a chance to play Pine Valley or Bethpage black which would you play ? Now you would have to pay at least five hundred bucks for Pine Valley and about 78.00 bucks for Bethpage let me hear you choices :)

Pine Valley, and that's not a knock on Bethpage Black, but Bethpage Black is a public course and if you wait long enough or are patient enough eventually you'll get a chance to play it. Pine Valley is siginificantly toughher to get on.

completely agree. anyone can play bethpage black, its just a matter of patientence. pine valley is ultra exclusive. thats a one in life time oppurtunity.

the real debate would be pine valley or augusta. thats a question that might not be able to be answered.

absolutely. don't forget to include cypress (the only one of the three i've played). my brother has played pine valley and said it is an absolutely unbelievable experience. from what i understand, augusta can only be played for a few months and always from the short (something like 6300 yard) tees.

I have not played Bethpage Black, but I've played Pine Valley, and it is unforgettable. If you have the chance to play Pine Valley, do not turn it down. As others have said, the opportunity will not likely come along that often (unless you happen to have several friends who are members, in which case, let me know if you need a fourth :) ).

Pine Valley for me. Already played the BB a couple times and I am by no means knocking it's value. It's a fantastic course, and really beat the hell out of me the first time out. :)

Played most of the top courses on eastern LI.. Maidstone, Atlantic, LI National, East Hampton G.C., etc. Still waiting to get out on Shinnecock or The Bridge though. :cheesy:

I know Pine Valley appeals to all the golfers who like the Poo Pah Clubie scene, but I live 10 min from Bethpage Black and have played it many times, a "Muni", Fantastic Course, and tough as a $5.00 steak. If you want to play the "Black", you better have your game together and you better be in shape! NO CARTS ALLOWED ON THE BLACK! You walk it, or you don't play it! NO YARDAGE MARKERS! There is a HUGE sign next to the starter's shack which says, "Attention, this is a very difficult course, and should be played by low handicap players only." (Or something to that effect) If you go out on this course and try to fake it, you're going to make a fool of yourself. I'm just telling it as it is. There are 5 courses at this complex. The Black, Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. The others are all excellent, with yellow being the easiest. Any player is restricted to playing the Black only once a month, and the reservation system is difficult to say the least. The "Open" is coming back here in 2009, and they are "Making Hay While The Sun Shines." :golfer:

Rather than do or die, let's do 10 plays at either. My vote would be 8 Pine Valley 2 Bethpage. When Tillinhast built BB, it was somewhat modeled off of PV as they both have similar terrain.

When I played PV, I was expecting to be let down do to all the hype. It is quite amazing but there are probably 7-8 all world holes there and the rest are very good and each is unique. It is a great great course and a wonderful place.

The greens at PV are also outstanding and is really where it jumps past Bethpage which has flatish greens.

The other problem for me with Bethpage these days is they keep it in US Open type of condition. Fairways are too narrow and the rough too thick, again for me.

BB is an awesome place, but it harder to get on these days post-Open, so I have not seen it in a year or two.

For the gentleman who said he just wants to walk the course, Pine Valley is open to spectators on the last day of The Crump Cup their invitational in late September. I like to play golf, but PV is worth walking. Just call the clubhouse after Labor Day.

You are correct. What I had reference to was: For a Public course! We ARE "Golf Rich" on Long Island and, on some of the tracks here, someone like me would have to take out a 2nd mortgage to play a round. :golfer:

If I understand your post correctly, the first tee on the "Black" sits up very high, (Like Mt Everest), with a balcony immediately behind where spectators can view the 1st drive. It is a 430 yd dogleg right par 4 which when viewing it from the T Box/Balcony, appears to be about 45 miles long! BB is 7398 Yards Par 71
