About the coverage, the pga should take this over from the masters. There are only 4 major tournaments a year and we can only watch 3 hours a day for the first 3 days? That is absolutely ridiculous. It is simple, if Hootie and the boys don't want to provide more coverage, just take away their major status and move the Players Championship to the same week and declare that the 4th major. If players still wanted to play it, so be it, but they would only get to play in 3 majors a year. Maybe that would be a threat the membership wouldn't ignore.

In contrast, I enjoyed Sunday's coverage. When Tiger disappeared from the leaderboard he also disappeared from the coverage. How often do we see coverage of Tiger's partner on a hole without a shot or mention of Tiger. I think CBS should be commended for covering the Masters on Sunday and not covering Tiger at the Masters. I'm sure they lost some viewers because of it (my boys included) but those of us following the tournament were pleased at my house. The early round coverage would be nice, but I am at the office and wouldn't be able to watch even if it were on TV. Masters.org filled that void for me. Just my two cents ...

exactly.. i can can record the HD broadcasts on thursday and friday but most folks can't so it doesn't PAY to have extra converage for them..

Considering these players are independent contractors and with the history of the Masters the pros would go play it regardless of whether or not the PGA approves of it. Do you really think after all this time that players would care if the PGA called it a major? The golfing public knows its importance and this would only add to its importance. Besides, how would it look if the top players decided to skip a PGA-sanctioned tournament to play in the Masters? And you know it would happen...

I thought the coverage was great on Sunday. Like another poster said it was refreshing not to have to watch Tiger Woods every single shot even though he wasn't in contention. During other tourneys they show every single shot the guy hits. Yeah that is great if you are a big Tiger fan but hey some of us like to watch other golfers play too. As far as Lanny goes...well I really don't care for him at all. Actually to be honest I think he is a "BEEP". That is my own personal opinion and I'm not trying to offend all the Lanny fans so please don't flame me for speaking the truth. The ratings were probably down because Tiger didn't make the final group and I think that is sad. Come on....its the Masters I can't believe people would stop watching just because "Tiwoooo" isn't in the final group. I dunno just my take on it all.

I commend CBS for broadcasting the 3rd round Sunday morning on USA. They didn't do that last year and it was a big mistake.

 

I was a little disappointed that CBS didn't show all the shots on their afternoon coverage. For example, they didn't show Tiger's approach shot on 15. They went to break, then came back and he was putting.

 

More than anything I think the coverage wasn't overly exciting because no one made a big "charge" on the back nine. There wasn't as much drama as there might have been if Tiger or Freddie sink a few putts.

Im not sure if anybody noticed it but Lanny wadkins has a pronounced lisp and he was butchering some of the spanish last names !!!! it was as annoying as the rain relay on day 3 !!!!

I totally agree with you even though I am a huge Tiger fan it was refreshing in that we saw only the guys that where in contention instead of seeing Tiger all the timeeven when he is not in contention. Nice to see other guys get the air time and not just the Tiger show. If Tiger is in contention or making his usual steller comeback then some the guys that are. Tiger is still #1 and always will be in my opinion but even he can't win them all.

They've made the back nine too difficult to make a charge - that's been the beauty of Augusta - the back nine charges.

 

Hooty changed the course and took out the drama.

 

But the way the challengers were putting, I don't know if anything would have worked.

Maybe I was watching a different tournament from everyone else, but if Tiger made that putt on 15 he would have been tied 2nd. How much more in contention did he need to be? It REALLY annoyed me that we hardly saw a shot he hit on the back nine. Not sure if I got the same pictures as you guys (I'm in the UK), but even still. That bugged me.

The problem with the coverage is Augusta National. They won't let CBS cover it the way they see fit. That is why McCord isn't there. He said some funny remark about how fast the greens were and Hootie and the boys didn't like it. How can anyone do their job with that kind of scrutiny.

Are you talking about Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal? Jimenez and Olazabal's name is pronounced with a "th" sound and not a "z" sound. They are from Spain and there are different dialects within the country.

Absolutely!! I can't stand that guy. They need to bring back Johnny Miller. It'll never happen, I know. I just like Johnny's insight. Sure, he can be critical, but he's equally critical to all players and the game in general. He was a #1 player for while, so I like his perspective and its believable when he tells you a bad a shot was a mechanical fault or a dead choke. Plus, he just goes into the kind of detail you don't get anywhere else - like the type shots a player can hit in any situation, or when he made that awesome call about a player catching the ball "a groove too low" just by hearing the sound of the impact.(I read his book and can't recall the tournament or player, but he made the call from the tower, while the ball was in the air. The commentator on the hole said something like 'it looks good' and then johnny chimed in about it sounding a little thin. The ball landed short in the water) Go read his book, its really good and a fast read.

The Masters' members run that tourney the way they want, NOT CBS. They dictate to CBS who, what, where, when and how long. I bet they don't even care about the PGA either. The Masters is an "independent" tournament from the tour.

 

The Masters is as close to a dictatorship as it can be. They call the shots.

Last year it was the second ball vibrated the first ball off the green when it landed. This year I loved it on 17 (I think) when he said that Phil needed to keep his composure play safe to the middle of the green & get his 2 putt to claim his championship. Phil of course fired right at the pin and put it within 10 feet. FYI Lanny, Phil never plays safe. Well not since he abandoned his workout routine and put the man boobs back on.
