Rusting?!

Hey members,

Picked up a used, like new set of 2004 TM RAC LT's 3-PW w/S300 shafts for $240. About 3 of the irons have very small rust spots in the cavities. Possibly the previous owner did not wipe these babies down that well after cleaning?

What can i use to remove these small rust spots. I'd like to tackle it now so it doesn't get any worse.

Happened to mine. TM replaced them, however they did not have any LT originals, so they replaced with the LT2, which had bigger heads with more offset. I traded the LT2 in for the MP-6- and could not be happier. Call TM. They may replace them.

Whatever you see IS NOT RUST. All LT's are 100% STAINLESS STEEL and con not rust whatsoever.

 

If it's not rust, it is definatley rust colored.

Stainless steel is not rust proof, only rust resistant, and even then, if the passivation layer is scratched or damaged in any way, it can and often does rust.

Stainless steel is an ALLOY. That means all atoms are evenly spaced in the metal, especially since transition metals do not form bonds with each other. There is no "passivation layer" in stainless steel. The entire mass is rust proof. The element that is put in a certain stainless steel (usually chromium) is evenly distributed and completely prevents all rust. I think the "passivation layer" you refer to is a chrome plating or other plating that prevents rust on a carbon steel head. That is the purpose of chrome. But again, stainless steel does not rust.

 

The spots you see are where the finish on the irons has reacted with fertilizers and pesticides from the course. This is just like what one may see on many putters because greens have the most chemicals and people wash putters much less often than other clubs. Sorry, but I have not found any way to remove these spots from any club.

Sorry but I have to say that this is simply NOT correct.

 

Even the finest stainles steel used in expensive kitchen knifes will and can eventually rust if not handled with proper care.

 

To think that stainles steel can not in any way rust is naive and incorrct.

Stainless steel is more rugged than normal steel and will not rust easily, but it wil certainly rust if you let it and don't keep it away from cold wet weather conditions.

 

I know of two of my friends who both had the Rac LT2 irons and both had touble with the irons rusting in the cavity and in the grooves. Both got new sets from Taylor Made - and Taylor Made explained that the LT 2 were not supposed to rust easily, but they COULD when used in harsh and very cold moisty conditions.
