Swing Thoughts: Two Drivers for Everyone! Uhhh, No.

I don't need a second driver, and if your name isn't "Phil Mickelson," neither do you.

Phil Mickelson won a few events with two drivers in his bag. Since winning the Masters on Sunday, I've received no less than four or five emails from Edwin Watts, TGW, and other online golf retail stores urging me to buy a second driver.



Do these retail outlets think golfers are that stupid? Are golfers really that stupid?

You don't need a second driver, and here's why: you can't hit your existing driver well enough. Spend the $400 on lessons, keep your 3W in your bag, keep your lob wedge, and learn to score. Until you can play as well as Phil Mickelson, your "second driver" had better be the one you replaced two years ago with your current driver - key word being "replaced," not "supplemented."



As for me, well, I'm boycotting any retail outlet that tries to get me to buy two drivers. I'll just fade and draw the one I have now, thank you very much.

The only people who have a driver swing that is consistent enough to benfit from two drivers are tour pros. For almost everyone else, it will be a disaster.

Let me first say, I am not going to carry 2 drivers. I can see how it would benefit some people. I have trouble turning over my G2 with same accuracy as my fade. I don't have problems with any of my other sticks so maybe 2 drivers would benefit me.

That's funny. Many golfers are told they would be better off using a three wood off of the tee by their instructors. And now someone who's just trying to make a buck is trying to profit off of Phil's success. One driver is fine for me.

I believe I read somewhere or saw on the golf channel that even Phil will be going back to one driver for the Open this year. The two drivers was strictly for the way Augusta sets up for him.

I own 2 very different drivers and each plays better in different situations. I have a 983E with an 85g aldila nv (s) that is cut down to 43.75" which is my workable fairway finder, and a 580xd which is dead straight and long.

 

What do you need the other for then?? Only kidding

Yeah i've done this before. I'm pretty sharp with the belly inside 10 feet but seem to struggle with distance every now and then so i'll put a standard length one in for the lag putts for a couple of rounds till I get my feel back

I had two drivers in the bag for most of last summer. Mostly due to the fact I was experimenting with my drivers, and hadn't settled on one. My best combination was when I had my Cleveland Launcher 460 Comp, and Cobra SZ 400 in the bag. My Comp was longer, but my misses were to the right, so as long as the right side was open I was hitting this driver. When the right side had trouble, I went with the Cobra. The closed face and smaller head on the SZ seemed to help me bring the ball back (although sometimes to far left). I shot my lowest round last year with these two drivers in my bag. Only carried 2 wedges during these rounds, to keep my club count down.

 

This year, my Callaway X-460 seems to be "the" driver, so hopefully I won't have to run 2 drivers anymore.

My best friend and frequent golf partner played all last year with 2 drivers and I know his scores were lower than they would have otherwise been. He's a 15-20 handicap and like alot of higher hdcp players he practices more with the driver than any other club, consequently he's most consistent with the big stick. IMO when you don't play that much and then only for fun the most demoralizing thing is to be ineffective off the tee. He used a 10.5 460 Launcher to hit high straight or slight draw shots and an 8 degree Ping SI3 to hit low fades (this club he used into the wind or on holes with alot of trouble on the left side). He doesn't try to work the ball, he just found 2 different sticks through trial and error that have different but consistant playing characteristice for him.
