Flighted Rifle shafts

soft-step/hard-step

Is there any negative effect to either hard-stepping or soft-stepping flighted rifles since they are designed for a particular ball flight for a particular iron? It seems that by moving them forward or backwards, you are, in essence, changing the ballflight pattern as well. Does anyone know or have experience doing this? Thanks.

If I'm trying to get to about 5.7 or 5.8, which do you think would be the better option - har or soft. I would think going either way would be enough - is that correct? Thanks.

see a certified rifle clubmaker. they will take rifle blanks and create a set for you flighted or not, to the flex and kickpoint you want. its well worth it. go to Royal Precision and find the nearest certified rifle clubmaker to you.

 

also, it seems in my experience (3 different certified rilfe clubmakers - 2 in texas, 1 in south carolina) that they don't agree with the fitting chart on the website. they think its a tad on the stiff side.

I went to a place in carrollton, TX, that is not on the list of Certified Rifle Centers, but all they use are rifle blanks for the very reason you mention. They evaluated my swing using a launch monitor and high speed video. I was tested using shafts only a few cycles apart to come up with the perfect fit for me. I found it interesting that they, too, must not agree with the suggested slope as my clubs were built with cpms starting at 301 for the 3I to 311 for the PW. They also spine all the shafts. For me at age 59, with a driver swingspeed of 100mph, and handicap of 7 (highest it has been in years because I seem to have developed the short game 'yips' - LOL), these are the sweetest clubs (MP32's) I have ever hit in my almost 50 years of playing golf. I just wish I had gone through a fitting like this years ago.

I'm actually not getting clubs reshafted, but am considering buyin the new Macgregor M685s which come stokc with flighted Rifles. You can get the 5.5, 6.0, etc. But, like I said, I kinda fall in between. I'm considering either asking if they can hard/soft-step, or maybe going 6.0 for PW - 7 iron and 5.5 for 6- 3 iron. Maybe this would give me the desired control for the short irons, and the softer feel in the long irons. Good idea or bad?
