Justin Timberlake - Golf course owner/architect/environmentalist?

How did I just find this out today?
I was searching for the "Greenest" golf courses in the world (G**gle) while at w*rk today, and which course do I see?

Mirimichi near Cuba Tennessee - I'd never hear of either until today.

I'm neither a huge fan of JT, nor am I a hater. I appreciate his talent, his chops on stage (and on the course?!?), and the ease with which he rubs elbow with top athletes (jeez, maybe I am a closet fan). How does this golf course not become the topic of conversation in the grill room?

Q. Is it a good course? If I'm in Tennessee, should I make time to play it?

Yes, you should. I played there today for the second time. I played the course alot several years ago before he bought it. They spent tons of money moving dirt and installing flowing creeks and other water features. The greens had been punched earlier this week so they were not up to normal standard. The redesign has created a fun and very challenging course to play. I am lucky to live so close. After a couple of years of tee/fairway maturity, this is going to be a fantastic track.

By the way, it is just outside the Memphis City limits.

That's probably it - we don't hear a lot of positive news about the US north of the 49th. If JT had killed the proshop staff, we'd have heard about that every 5 minutes.

Well down here on the Golf Channel he does these "green" commercials where he talks about various courses around the world turning to green ways.

1.) I don't need daily updates - there's more to life than golf.

2.) They have a website.

Well, you being in Canada, I understand - you have ICE Hockey & ice fishing. And your country is frozen half the year, so you don't even want to think about golf, really. So I understand.

For those that haven't heard, Mirimichi will be closing again this month (Jan '10) to accelerate construction of the clubhouse/ facilities and implement MORE upgrades after officially opening in July 2009. The scheduled reopening is July 2010...the 17th I believe. Rumor is JT wants to host a "major" and is making a few changes recommended by the PGA/USGA. For those who have never seen this course, you really should make plans to play it. I'll bet anything it makes Golf Digest's Best New Courses list for 2010 or 2011...depending on their dates for consideration.

As far as "top shelf" courses in the Memphis area go, we have a few private and/or casino courses anyone would be happy to play (i.e. TPC Southwind, Spring Creek Ranch, Memphis Country Club, The Cottonwoods), and Mirimichi is arguably better than any of the above courses. This course has it all...length, bunkering, shotmaking, contoured/fast greens, water/waterfalls, natural rough.

For those that don't know the story, this course is where JT learned to play the game. A couple years ago, the course was being auctioned and was likely headed for destruction and real estate development. JT stepped in, bought the course, and vowed to make it the first "green" course, as well as one of the nicer courses, in America. In his words...his gift to the Memphis area. The course is public and current green fees are $59...cart included.

To get the true picture of what's in store for this course, consider these points:

1. Course is owned by a VERY wealthy entertainer whose LOVE for the game of golf is second to none;
2. It opened for 6 months, JT had the PGA folks come in and look at it, and he's already closing it (after only being open for 6 months) to make their recommended upgrades;
3. One of JT's goals for this course is to host a Major sometime in the near future. If you think Torrey Pines, Bethpage Black and their relationship with the U.S. open, you'll probably have an idea what he's thinking;
4. It has been stated publicly, many times, JT did not build this course to make a profit. He wanted to save the course he learned on and give something back to the people of Memphis.
5. Callaway will be opening one of their "Learning Centers", one of a few (6 I believe...but don't quote me on the number) worldwide, at Mirimichi.
6. The clubhouse is supposed to be around 44,000 sq.ft. and will be situated to overlook several holes...most notably 9 and 18.
7. The course will also have a first-class driving range AND a NICE par 3 course for beginners and those who don't have time for a 4 hour round.

The residents of the Memphis area are extremely fortunate to have Mr. Timberlake, his family, and Mirimichi Golf Course! If you find yourself traveling through the Mid-South after July 2010, check out Mirimichi...you will very likely be pleasantly surprised. :clapping:

You're either an idiot, employed by Justin Timberlake,or both.

No sentient being would ever put Mirimichi in the same class as Memphis CC.SCR is head and shoulders better,as are several other area clubs.

Mirimichi is a lot of good things but design isn't one of them.It's a curiosity more than anything else.It's foolishly bunkered,narrow in the wrong places,with uninteresting greens and surrounds.

This renovation will ameliorate only some of the obvious problems.

Ouch!?! I would probably agree that Mirimichi is not better than MCC or SCR, but not so...a...mad.gif

Β

One of the previous poster (guy from Talent) might want to elaborate, but I heard (grapevine) that the irrigation got screwed up on the greens by someone during construction and they were holding an enormous amount of water which lead to all sorts of problems.

Β

It may be equal to MCC or SCR one day, but the PGA/USGA will have some major renovation ideas I am sure.
