SS= ? Yards Driver setup question

Recommended Posts

This is a loaded question. If I were to get a driver perfectly set up for launch and spin numbers, what would my total yardage be? Mainly on a vector launch monitor.

SS 105-107

I know impact, launch, spin, and so on are all factors.

I'm talking perfect world, perfect contact, perfect spin, you get the picture.

What is the total assuming the 105-107 range.

in the real world a very good player will have a smash factor in the range of 1.4 to 1.5 with a driver but ussually not any higher. smash factor = ball speed/swing speed. we need to find the ball speed to estimate carry distance. so we do some math...107 x 1.5= 160.5 ball speed. ussually with the driver in perfect conditions for every mile per hour of ball speed you will get 1.6 to 1.7 yards of carry. so...we do some more math 160.5 x 1.6 = 272.85 carry but this is only an estimate of a perfectly hit golf shot under pefect conditions. i hope it helps

I have a SS of 106 mph and I would agree with the calculated range of 256.8 to 272.85 yards.

Without getting into specifics, my vector results I've averaged are below. This is with a 9.5 comp, a 10.5 G5, a 10.5 R7. and a R510 TP 10.5. Also tested with a Pro V1 and Pro V1 X.

I bring all this up in an effort to find out if I'm just chasing a dream to find a better driver. :cheesy:

My swing is what it is, and unless I workout seriously and do a stretching program, I'm stuck with what I've got.

Here it is. Numbers have been rounded and averaged for ease of use.

Ball Speed= 155

SS= 106

Carry= 263

Total= 279

Launch= 13.6

Spin= 2727

Smash= 1.46+

I'm looking for ideas on what I should be looking at both loft and shaft flex. I generally hit it straight with a slight cut. My miss is a big cut. I'm looking at R7 425 9.5-10.5. I'm also looking at FT-3 tour 9.5-10.5 w/draw bias.

I choose these two models partly do to their draw bias, and popularity in the market.

I hit a 10.5 tour Draw FT-3 w/NVS-65 S. It was short for me, I believe it has too much spin.

Talk to me guys, I think I'm getting lost in the search for a perfect driver. :cheesy: :)

vector could give you anything because the machine can be adjusted/rigged. real world carry at sea level with 105-107 ss and optimal launch conditions ... 255, 260 absolute best.

you guys who really have swing speeds of 105-107 (and they may truly be higher) are kidding yourselves if you think you can consistently carry a ball 265-270 unless you are playing at elevation in very hot dry air.

I think in quest for distance I've listened to all this high launch/low spin mumbo jumbo, and went with too high of a loft. It must create too much spin.

I compared these two drivers in real world conditions late in the day on my home course, the 9.5 was clearly longer, by about 12 yards.

I compared a 10.5 FT-3 Tour Draw w/ NVS-65 S 45"

and a X460 9.5 Tour w/Prolite 35 S 45"

The 10.5 looked so nice in the air and goes very straight; however, I hit my 15* 3 wood 5 yards behind it. This was down hill.

The 9.5 looked like it had too little spin because it goes out flat and then turns slightly right.

I was looking for something to correct the cut and also optimize my launch conditions.

I'm so frustrated, I'm actually thinking of getting my own vector launch monitor. Each one I visit at retail seems to be calibrated differently. It's a pain in the behind.

Each 10.5 seem to have the perfect launch but too much spin. I hit it straighter than any other driver, just shorter than all others as well.

Each 9.5 seem to have too low of a launch, but with better spin numbers.

How can this be? Is there not a high spinning 9.5 or a low spinning 10.5? That seems like the fit for me.

I'm desperate, Help.

I'm going to have to trade the 10.5 for a 9.5 Tour draw.

Anymore thoughts.

Have you gotten time in on Callaway's new fitting cart system?

It's going to be hard to expect each system to show you consistent numbers from session to session, but 90 percent of it is going to be swing, not machine.

I know from years of playing that if I go out tight, no stretching, I tend to hit the ball higher with the driver. If I'm loose/warmed up, generally I hit the ball more from the slot on a slightly lower, flatter trajectory. This type of thing can put in two different drivers if you're working off the monitor numbers alone.

You may be confusing distance with carry. Unfortunately, you will usually have to give up one to get the other. I use an 8.5 on courses that allow me to hit the fairway and let it run and do not have fairway bunkers and doglegs to carry. I have a 10.5 that I use on the opposite type of courses. The thing is, on a launch monitor, you should weigh the carry number higher than the overall. It is what is usually most important. I am sorry there is no easy answer to your question but, golf is give and take. On a side note, most people will hit the higher lofted clubs more accurately. It is easy to get higher loft to go straight. This can sometimes equate to more distance as the shortest point between two points is a straight line :)

You make a good point, launch monitors have got me into higher lofts, which in turn has me hitting tighter drives.

However I demoed the 9.5 and was unable to hit any of my 10.5's as far.

Funny thing is on the 9.5's or lower I find myself trying to tee it high and end up with a lot more mishits.

Maybe I'm stuck in that spot Phil is in, accuracy or distance.

I like the launch and height the 10.5's deliver for me, but I want the distance to go with it.

Oh well, a boy and his toys.
