Vokey Wedges

Should I go +1/4" or does it matter?

I am about to get a 52 and 56 vokey, my irons are currently +1/4 inch lengthen. Before I purchase them I would like to get the advice of the Golf Wrx's out there. I was about to order them yesterday when the shop I was at told me that since it was only 1/4 inch it really did not matter, that its such a small increase that I would not notice it--my question, is this true? Should I not worry about it, or my irons are +1/4 so too should be my wedges?

IMHO, if you have this option, I'd have the wedges made +¼" to match the extra length in your irons.

Back in '98, I was professionally fitted for a set of 3-SW PING ISI's and I went with +¾" on everything. The PING pro was at pains to point out the importance of having ALL of your irons match your physique and swing.

Currently, I play Callaway X-14's that are +½" on the 3 thru' PW (stock Callys are ¼" longer than stock PINGs....so same overall length as my old ISI's). They didn't come with a matching SW/LW, so I bought standard length 54° and 58° Forged+ wedges. As soon as I started playing with these clubs I noticed the difference in length: not on partial or greenside chip shots, but on full swings I was blading a lot of my shots. I guess that I was used to the extra length in the PINGs, and was subconsciously coming up on the ball through the shot. I popped off the grips on the Forged+'s and epoxied a ½" aluminum butt shaft extension in each one. Now, I don't have any problems at all.....other than the rest of my game!!!

To sum up...if you need the extra length in your irons, you need it in your wedges.

I agree, it doesn't cost any more to have them custom made for you. Also, the lie on wedges is VERY important, be sure the lies are set for you at the same time!

if 1/4" is such a small incriment then why are your irons 1/4" long?

if your irons are a 1/4" long, your wedges should be 1/4". this is assuming you irons are a 1/4" long because of your floor to wrist height and not because you want more distance or a flatter swing.

Get your wedges the way you want them.

I've ordered them +1/2 and + 1/4 before and asked for an extra wrap around the grip for the lower hand - so get what you want - you're paying.

Thanks, I think he was just trying to push the floor wedges on me, instead of me ordering a set, alos I have my x-18 pros bent 1* upright? Should I do this with the wedges also? or will this affect the bounce or angle?

The 1* upright is a different story-- I think I'd leave my wedges a little flat. Lots of pros play their wedges flatter than their irons, to make sure the heel doesn't dig and to err towards a higher, softer shot from the wedges. Also makes it easier to chip with the toe of the wedge.
