Is Srixon I302 a viable option vs. MP-60's

Which is more forgiving, which has more offset.
I am a 10 to 11 hcp and want a good looking, forged iron with some good amount of forgiveness.

I am intrigued by the 302 irons and want to know your thoughts on them and how they compare to MP-60's, X-Tours and Titl 735 irons.

Please give feedback related to these irons on the following criteria: feel, distance, forgiveness, etc.

Thanks for your help.

Srixon 302s are definitely more forgiving than the MP 30s IMO, a lot more forgiving. Along with the Mizuno MP 32s, Titleist 704.cbs and the Bridgestone Combo forged J33 irons, I seriously think that the Srixon 302s are one of the best forged cavity backs available, and for the price these days, they're hard to beat. My hdcp is between 8 to 10 and irons are the weakest part of my game, I played my best golf about a year or so ago with the Srixon 302s, the looks are very traditional minimal offset satin finish thin topline standard sized forged cavity backs. I will be getting these again with the Rifle shafts.

Since I own both sets I feel qualified to give you an informed opinion.

1st MY i-302 were my main irons from fall 2004 until last fall when as a b-day present I got mp-60's which only saw a couple of November sub 40*F rounds of golf.

The i-302:

head size is larger almost on par with mx-23, but with offset that is on par with the mp-60. the finish is more of a brushed sating and the shaft is stock rifle 5.0. In my hands the i-302 were a wonderful set of irons with enough forgiveness for up to a 15 hcp if they were a decnt ball striker. There was plenty of feedback as there was a distinct difference in feel between a pured shot and a toed or thin one yet the outcomes didn't vary by much. I felt out of the rough they were ok but not spectacular. while they had a nice forged feel they do not have that Mizuno sweet buttery thing going.

Ball flight is medium high and long irons (3-4) could be a bit tough to get good height.

mp-60:

Finally got 2 rounds in warmer temps wit these. The are narrower topline and sole compared to i-302. Through the set they hit a bit higher but equally long. The long irons were easier to hit high for me than the i-302. The feel was softer at impact....mmmmmmm like butta!!! Workability and forgiveness were not remarkably different between the 2 sets. That said the sole on the mp-60 seemed to work a bit better in my hands. My 1st rouind of the year with them I striped 3 irons to inside 10 feet and 2 of those inside 4 feet. Made 3 of four birds! Shafts in em are DG r300. Workability was great as I cut a 4 and 5 iron into greens with easy yet these babies would hit straight if I didnt try to work them.

Verdict:

I own both. If money was no object and I could own just one then mp-60 would be the set I'd buy and it will be my main set this season. That said if you prefer a marginally bigger clubhead and money is an issue you can do no worng with the Srixon. they are the most under rated player's CB of the last few years. They have won a LPGA major and have had runner up finishes inmens majors and won on tour. So the pros will use em too.

I have been playing Mizuno for the past 3 years, with my last set being the MP32's. I have since moved on to the Srixon I302 w/ Rifle 6.0's. I love these irons, they feel great as most forged irons due, they are forgiving, but very very workable. The found the trajectory to be very similar to the MP32's, mid to high and penetrating in the long irons, and mid to high with the short irons but more boring.

I played the MP37's for 2 seasons prior to my short experince with the MP32's. The Mp32's are fantastic, but not to much more forgiving than the MP33 or my MP37's. i did however find that the 3-6 irons flew higher than the MP37's and MP33's with the MP32's.

Why did I switch? Well my handicap went from a 10-12 to a 17 starting out this year. I know its earlyin the season and I still have to get back into the swing of things, but I do not think blades help me any more than a players forged cavity. On my bad days blades are just not fun, on good days they are great. With the I302's bad days are OK, and good days are great.

I think Srixon makes a fantastic product with quality on the same level as Mizuno. The heads are pure as well as teh specs, including head weights are spot on. I am a club builder at golfsmith so when I received them I measured them up as I usualy do with new irons so I can adjust them or pull out the shafts which are off. With my I302's everything was right on, all shafts Frequencied out very weel, and the swing weight was perfect.

I love them, very versilte with the sole grinds which can play from tight to soft fariways. Great Distance, and control. I really like everything about them. Iwas so impressed with Srixon that I am now testing their Drivers and balls.

Good luck with whatever you choose, as I have learned from hoing clubs for so many years, is that you really need to find something that feels good and then just stick with it and learn to hit them. Changing has killed my HC and this year I going to put an end to that.
