Hi-Bore vs. Zolex drivers

The zolex drivers (GC infomercials) have weird shaped heads and shafts. WHen the Hi-bore came out, I thought, it looks a lot like those zolex drivers. Go here http://www.xfactordirect.com/superpro.htm#
to see the super pro zolex driver. Notice the pic at the bottom of the page. The back of the clubhead looks a lo like a Hi-bore. These clubs have been out for 2-3 years or more.

I mentioned on another fourm the similar design characteristics of both the Sasquatch and the Hi-bore to the Hammer (Zolex) driver.

 

I don't know if you are aware of the advertisements for the Hammer/Zolex. It is a club that is the target of considerable derision on the golf fourms, mainly because of the (cheesy) advertisements.

 

As the result of my post, I too was the subject of many barbs for even raising the comparison of the the Hammer/Zolex to prominent OEM's.

 

In a show of support, I agree with you. Many of the design characteristics found in the Hammer/Zolex seem to have been incorporated in the Sasquatch, Hi-bore. In fact, if you think about the design of most modern day drivers, companies are looking for ways to move weight further back from the clubface, and low.

 

Perhaps Jack Hamn and his Hammer/Zolex team were a little ahead of their time.

 

btw: I believe Maltby had a driver a few years back that the Sasquatch/Hi-bore resembled even more than the Hammer/Zolex.

I believe the Maltby was the X-Streamliner.

 

Just found my old Golfworks catalog. Scoopback with a relatively large face. Part of the heel cutout. Profile at address reminds me of that dude in the Patriots logo. Wish I could scan it but it is hella fugly. :)

I think you're looking at it wrong. The Zolex drivers, etc were trying to make it more aerodynamic. They mention nothing about lower and further back CG.

 

The Hi-bore, IMO, was built upon the recent trend of carbon crowns or these very thin crowns. Taking the weight they saved from that and placing it low and back. Well, the Hi-bore does that by just not having a crown (or not in the normal sense).

We are all forgetting the club that started it all. The 1987 Top Flite Magna Driver. It was the Driver/ ashtray that was 18 years ahead of it's time.
