What was your swingweight on the mx 23? If they were heavy heads the flex of the 5.5 would soften thus potentially more distance. Ping swingweight usually c9-d0. lighter head = stiffer shaft. Most pros play x because they have heavy weight heads not so much they need the x. try a little lead tape on the iron see if it helps the distance. I guarantee the I5 is a hotter face than the mx 23.

I have a new set of I5's with TFR 5.5's with standard loft and lie built by PING WRX dept. I am loosing about 1 club length on all my iron shots. Has anyone else had this problem ?? They feel great just short.....

let me hear your opinions please..

if you call ping they will tell you that they match the shafts by weight NOT frequency matched.the clubs are mostl likely much stiffer that a 5.5.they will not frequency match them unless you pay 25.00 extra per club.all they do is slap the shafts in and the swingweights and frequencies are all over the map.take the clubs to a qualified club builder.if they are not 5.5 and the swingweights are not within range take them back to where you purchased them and get your money back.

Have the i5s in Z-Z65 and once owned MX-23s - similar distance.

I haven't lost anything with the Pings - gained a tad.

Have someone analyze the shafts and check swingweights

Are you confirmed that what you said is true? The reason is that my experience is different, though not entirely. I have a set of Ping i3 O-Size with WRX Flighted Rifle 5.5 shafts that are frequency matched, but not at 5.5, at 6.0. It appears to me like they simply just stick the Flighted Rifle 5.5 shafts into the heads, no matter what swingweight you order.

i am confused by your statement.i said that the rifles play stiffer and you said your 5.5 play to 6.0.to me that is stiffer.rifle shafts are frequency match, but when you put them into the ping head they play alot stiffer.ping does not make sure that all the shafts are the correct frequency's after installed.i was told this fact by several employess at ping including the head of the wrx dept.their up charge on any shafts but their own ie cs lite and zz65's are higher than any other of the oem and they do nothing to give you a matched set to play with.i hope someone from ping reads this and will address their short comings.

I have been playing my Ping I5/G5 combo with rifle 5.5 from Ping WRX and have not noticed any issue with incorrect frequency. My iron play has become remarkably more accurate with the Rifles, than the my old Ping irons with the DG-variant steel shaft.

I have noticed a slight loss in distance, but this can be attributed to the usual winter, cold, damp, distance loss I always had with my old set of irons. My yardage reference is always based on the heat of the summer, dry fairways and greens, and my high season fully grooved swing.

My last round of golf, all my other clubs (driver, 3-wd, 5-wd) have all lost distance, especially after a few plugged lies.

Had exact results as SwingMan - actually gained some yardage compared to my last set (Cally X-Tour). Most guys I know playing i5's think they are long compared to most irons.

That's why I said my experience was different, although NOT entirely. Yes, the shafts play stiffer, but they are frequncy matched and so it doesn't appear to me that they sort the shafts by weight. That's what I was trying to say.

I'll be very surprised if they really do that. And, based on what you said, it sounds like you know someone at Ping, otherwise I don't know how you could talk with the head of WRX department personally. Also, I would be even more surprised if they said something like that to you, but you didn't know them personally.

I demo a set of i5 with stock CS-Lite and I found them to be longer by half a club to one club length. I play Rifle 5.5 and so I've ordered a set with Rifle Project X 5.0. Hopefully, they will just stick the shafts into the heads and they will come out at the flex that I want. I don't want them to come out at 5.0. (I know Project X shafts are weight sorted, not frequency sorted.)

it's very simple...yes i know many of the people at karsten.ping has designed shafts that go with their heads.the cs lite's are made for their newer irons.there is a plastic emblem on the back of the head that they can put different weighted emblems to adjust for the swingweight.when they build a set of the new irons they try to match the head weight to the shafts.they do not put each club on a frequency machine.without doing thatt here is no way the stiffness of the shafts will match.they will also tell someone that if you send them a set of older pings example eye 2 ,isi, zings all they do is slap the shafts in as best they can because one again the heads are sorted by weight.a 5.5 rifle will proform completely different in each oem clubs unless the club builder has rifle blanks and builds each club certain spec's.

Hmm, if I were you, I would be very disappointed. Having many friends there and they still built you clubs that have frequencies all over the map. Then, they still said like it could not be helped. Not much of a friend if you ask me.

Anyhow, I'm still surprised if they do what you said. The Rifle shafts should come in sets from Royal Precision as Ping irons all have taper tips. I know it's hard to find a set that the frequencies are really matched. (If you could find a set of Rifle 5.5 that comes out 5.4-5.6, that's really a good set already.) But, still, it shouldn't be like all over the map.

I'll let you know how the shafts in my i5 turn out when I got them.

Anyway, back to the topic.

I placed a call into Rifle (Royal Precision) and they unequivocally said that Ping WRX figures out the exact Rifle shaft specs based on computerized calculations that take into account the clubhead you buy, the shaft length, total weight and the swingweight. They take those Rifle shaft specs and place the order into Royal Precision.

So for those of you that place Rifle shaft orders into Ping WRX relax. If there is a distance loss, it's possible that the shafts are a bit too stiff. But with more distance, you give up control.

when you have a sec call PING WRX and see what they say. Would like to know if they confirm what Rifle says. If I ordered a 5.5 is it a true 5.5? I ordered the clubs and they were here in 2 days dont see how they had time to order the shafts from RIFLE that fast. My thinking is they use there stock RIFLE shafts they have on hand. If thats the case due they check to make sure the shafts are the true frequency.

If you ordered a 5.5, Ping WRX builds it to frequency to a 5.5 bottom line..... the likely reason you received your sticks so early is that they don't necessarily order a set of rifle shafts every time they get an order. They usually get bulk bundles for the more common specifications.

Distance loss could also be a result of ballooning which means that you may be playing a shaft flex too weak.
