R7 TP Paint chipping?

joneser

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a brand new still in the plastic r7 TP 15° fairway wood. Not sure if I wanted to replace the 904f with this club but I got a great price on it so I will give it a try. First swing out of the light rough.....little high on the face but felt fairly good, hit a nice high draw that went about 245. Go over to the bag, wipe the club off and much to my surprise there is a few paint chips along the paint line. This was absolutely not a sky ball....there was a little grass between the ball and the club. I have not put a sky mark on a club since I learned the game at age 5 (34 years ago). After looking at the club closely, there is a very sharp edge to the paint line and it feels like I could actually chip the paint with my finger nail if I were to try. The paint actually comes down over the edge of the face. I looked at a number of TM fairway woods and it looks like they are fairly inconsistant with the paint line. I also know that the Vsteels had this problem when they first came out. Has anyone else had this happen? I had V-steels for a couple of years and Titleist 904f for more than a year and I never had a scratch anywhere on the paint....1 ball and this happens. Had I popped this up and made a sky mark I would accept this.....I would not be happy but I would accept it. It just isn't the case however. This was a fairly good shot and I would have never dreamed this would be the case after I wiped it off. How is TM customer service?

Thanks

Eric

you didn't purchase this club from tgw did you? I bought one from them and it came in the shrink wrap with chips along the leading edge. I returned it and they advised they were sending it back to TM.

I have noticed that some of the paint lines on some of the TM stuff does have some pretty sharp leading edges which could cause some pretty easy chipping to occur.

Nope....bought it from a member here and it has nothing to do with him. It was perfect before the swing....less than perfect after. The paint on the top has an extremely sharp edge to it. I checked it against the steel version and some R5s and they are very inconsistant. Some are sharp some are not....some have the paint going over the edge onto the face a little and that is what makes the sharp edge. TM will be getting a call on Monday. I could live with it if I had made a mistake.....this was a fairly well struck shot that went 245yds. What the hell is going to happen if I get under one....the paint might peel back off the crown :)

Well, this post was not put out here to question whether or not I can hit my 3 wood 245 yds or not but If I did say carry (and I did not), I meant that it was 245 in total. Which in either case would be weak by tour standards. Fluffy lie nice high draw is not anything special. I would say that the majority of the tour players would have been hitting something less from that spot. But thanks anyways for the informative post.

very nice response joneser. i can never understand the point of those posts.

but back to the original subject. i have had about 4 r7 quad drivers and a r5. all of them are prone to chips at the top edge of the face where it meets the crown. it believe that is a seem where the face and body is welded together. whereas some drivers like the titleists have a face insert where the seem is towards the middle of the face and is not painted. the edge of the face and crown is one piece. therefore the paint job is a lot more durable. i still have a 983k that i have hit high many times and the paint is still perfect.

please let us know how you make out with tm cs.

I've got the same club and noticed the same thing on mine after a few rounds. Not a sky mark but it looks like the grass got inbetween the ball and face and left a bit of a patch where the paint chipped a bit. Funny thing is my buddy who hits the 4 wood has the exact same thing as well. never thought of sending it back to TM. Let me know how ot works out.
