Putter fitting at Golf Galaxy

Anyone been through it?

Just wondering if any of you have been through a putter fitting session at GG, and has it helped?

I did it, I have a pretty standard stroke, so it didn't give me anything shocking or revolutionary.

 

The fitting for length and lie angle is based on what is most comfortable to you. Then you hit some putts with impact tape to get a feel for swingweight.

 

It is 19.99, and it covers bending the putter to your specs - getting it cut and regripped is extra.

 

I'd say it is worth it, unless you know your specs, and even then, it is helpful to use their technology.

 

If anyone uses a different grip, and wants to chime in, I would be interested to hear their opinion.

I went through it just to try it out and see what they would say. If you sign up for the club online or at the store, they have free fittings during the different demo days. They send you a coupon in the mail. I paid for it but received several free coupons within the last few weeks.

 

To answer your question, it definitely helps determine a better fit for you instead of just picking a putter that feels and looks good to you. I had an idea of what I needed, but wanted to see what they would say. I kept my thoughts to myself to not influence the fitting. The only reason I had an idea is because of many putter changes over the last year. I wish I did something like this sooner and it might of helped me find the right putter last year instead of through trial an error.

 

The fitting recommended a heavier putter, 1 degree upright and 34 1/4" length. It matched what I thought I needed. I was playing with a 33" putter and it felt too short, but 34 and 35 did not feel right. I thought I needed 1-2 degrees upright and felt that my putter was too light.

 

I ended up modifying a SC newport II, 33" 350 grams. I added an extension to get the length they recommended and since the putter head was heavier to begin with, the added length increased the swing weight. The lie was bent 1 degree upright. The putter feels great and better than when it was stock.

 

Keep in mind this is not the high speed camera fitting so it is not super accurate, but gets you closer than just buying something off the rack.

Finally went through the fitting. Now I have to take the putter(s) back in to be altered. Will have the shafts cut to 33 1/2 inches, which was somewhat of a surprise. Also, having a slight lie adjustment. Now, my problem is the grips. My Yes! putter I'm not to concerned, as I can through another Winn grip on it no problem, but they mentioned they'r out of Scotty Grips right now.

 

What would be a good grip to put on a Scotty Studio Style putter? Anything on the market close to a Scotty grip?

Ping, blackout or origninal pingman grip. Its what Tiger uses on his putter and is identical to the studio style red grip.

I got my SC newport beach fitted at GG and I must say, wow what a difference! The toe of my putter was WAY of the ground, I say it in the mirror. They bent my putter 4 degrees flat. BINGO my ball rolls true to where I want it to go! Oh yeah I make alot more putts! :golfer:

ok - got it done today. cost 19.99 - got 50% off via advantage member coupon = $10.

 

as per the PGA pro there

= recommended to me 32" length + L&L = 69 & 4

 

i have my old trusty ping pal 4 - becu putter - 33" - 70 & 4.

- putter checked out. i use the ping on slow greens and the cammies on faster greens.

 

since it it a becu putter - no bending here because of potentials to crack & break the putter.

so kept as is.

 

- as per the mirror aligment system, he recommended to have my eyes right over the ball...

i have always putted with my eyes about 1-ball distance behind the ball. hummm will give it go tomorrow morning.

 

- i also had an old 8802 style becu putter which i got cut down to 33".

once again no go with trying to align the lie & loft of this becu putter.

paid for a new grip & regripping service.

 

so - not much news but will try out the eyes alignment.

 

not too bad experience. the PGA pro was very nice & informative and was nice enough to tell me bring my other putters & he would check the alignments...
