Love the Scotty Studio Style Newport, BUT..

Is there an alternative?

I love the crisp, solid feel of the Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport with the stainless steel inlay. But, I'd rather not have to lay 2-3 bills on a putter. Is there another putter out there, that isn't as expensive, that has approximately the same feel as the new Scotty?

The Ping G2's have, IMO, the softest feel of any Ping Putter or any other putter for that matter.

Sorry, but I'm not looking for soft. I'm looking for crisp. Perhaps something else that is milled? Never Compromise Milled Series? Bobby Grace M1? Something more obscure?

 

Its hard to explain unless you've demo'd that Scotty.

I've heard good things about the Yes series. You could try the TM AGSI series, the NC Milled putters are very good as well. Thats all I can think of right now.

Ping is always a good choice, but without the insert. Either the G2 stainless or isoforce. They have a solid feel but not too clicky on contact. You can still order some models in bronze, but I am not sure of the cost. Take a look at www.ping.com and select either G2 or Classics in the putter selection. If you call ping, they can give you a better idea on prices and options you are looking for. Any ping retailer can order them for you and will provide a fitting.

 

If you are set on the Scotty putter, you can get one cheaper than retail stores. Check out discount dans or proimage for a more competitive price.

A fitted G2 stainless Anser is what I have now. Its a good putter. It just has a slightly softer feel and the swingweight is a bit lighter than I prefer.

 

What about the Ping Specify putters? I know they made a heavier model. I wonder if they are any different.

You can get most of the pings in different weights. I would give them a call if you like the ping models.

Try a Bobby Grace M1.

 

That BeCu insert is EXACLTY what you were talking about in terms of being "crisp".

 

It feels softer than a traditional stainless or even carbon steel putters, but much harder than the mushy insert putters. You've got to try it to believe it, really great feeling putter. I'm not particularly a fan of insert putters, but this one got me thinking.

 

BTW, I thought the use of BeCu was abandoned because of health concerns during manufacturing, does anyone know why Bobby Grace can still use it?

Have you tried Tommy Armour Tri-Measure models? They are old models, very cheap (less than $50), has different length/weight. I'd tried it once and just love it. It's harder than those "plastic" inserts but is softer than 2 ball white steel.

The hard part is to find a retail store (so you can try) with them in stock.

Thanks Taylormadefan. I was actually looking at the M1. It looked like a solid putter. And I like that you can change the weights via the weight kit.

 

BTW, have you hit the R7 XD irons? VERY nice. I ordered a custom set a month ago. They knocked my Ping I3's out of the bag. I also invested in the R7 425 driver. My friends are amazed because I was a huge Ping guy prior to testing those clubs.

the FEEL is entirely different than a Scotty, but the Yes! Golf models are the first putters that are causing me to stray from my beloved Scotty Cameron. Try 'em, they're spectacular putters.

I did play the Callie for 2 weeks and had to return it, the Callie was just too heavy!!! I the feel was nice!!! Try to find a Newport/Laguna Studio Stainless or Pro Platinum on eBay. These are the best putters Scotty ever made. Both can be had for cheap.

what about the Ben Hogan Bettinardi series, which you can have for really cheap prices now. Bettinardi is one of the respected putter makers. I play the baby bee series and the Bettinardi blade series are very solid and crisp.
