Shaft flex in wedges for Tiger?

From a golf digest article from awhile ago....

I read an article awhile ago that I believe was in Golf Digest. It was during all the criticism of Tigers new swing makeover and changing to new equipment like ignite 460 etc... it also talked about Tigers wedges and the fact that his SW has a little less bounce than most stock and was around 9 or so. It said also that he uses a lighter shaft in his wedges cause he likes to feel more flex for the wedges. Does anyone know what flex he would be referring to??

as much as it hurts to admit, I let my demons from when I played more intense sports take over, and I slammed my wedge a little harder than needed. :cheesy: :blink: when your 40 yds from the green on a few par 4's and cant put it within 20 ft once, I think anyone would feel my pain (everyones had the days) :) needless to say, I need a new shaft and I've only ever used the stock wedge flex they have in vokeys off the shelf. If anyone has a shaft preference in their wedges also, feel free to shoot some opinions at me........other than on my club throwing abilities that is :cheesy:

he uses a littel lighter flex but the hsatfs are about the same weight, he uses S400's in his wedges and has for a very long time, not sure if they are tipped or not or if they are the older 35" version with a shorter first step distance, but we do know they are dynamic gold S400

i use rifle 6.0 in my irons and took a set of old nike forged wedges to get reshafted and put a rifle 6.0 in my 53* since i use it a lot for full shots, and rifles have a softer tip than the stock dynamic gold so i could get some more spin out of it. i went with a 5.5 in the 58* and 60* since i do not use these for full shots and get more feel out of shorter shots with the softer shaft.

 

its really a personal preference.

Thanks for the info......I just recently switched from titleist 670's with dg x100's to some 704's with project X 6.0's. I love the new shafts in my irons but I just recently have realized that I have never really experimented with my wedges like I do my other clubs. Looking forward to trying some new stuff though.....thanks again

isn't x-100 weight 130grams, and S400 weight 128-129?

 

that's 1 gram difference...??

Precision Rifle make's shafts specificly for the wedges. I have them in my 54 and 60. Like BUTTA!

if the weights are accurate and its only a gram, still we are talking about a guy who could tell the difference in thickness on the top-line of a couple of his putters scotty made that was out a microscopic amount

i believe that S400 are 132grams, so slightly heavier, but when cut down to wedge length they come out lighter than X100, also tiger doesnt use normal X100 he ises a form of DG Tours which are about 134 grams in weight

A lighter flex. That's a new one on me. Maybe try a more flexible weight.

tiger's said in the past that he sometimes uses 8- or 9-iron shafts cut down to wedge length for more feel

my old set had rifle 7.0 irons and spinner 6.5 wedges. because I rarely (never) use a full swing with a wedge, I like the feel of a slightly more flexible shaft.

 

I'm trying to slow down (a bit) for accuracy and have moved to project x 6.5 irons and I kept the stock DG wedge shafts in my vokeys. while the spinner shafts did feel slightly better to me, and produced a higher-trajectory, it's not a big enough difference to warrant reshafting my current wedges. I kind of like the lower trajectory I'm getting now anyway.

 

Also, I keep the swingweight in my wedges fairly high (a couple points higher than in my other clubs), which I think contributes to the shaft feeling more flexible.

If I am not mistaken, I remember hearing that JD also plays a very soft shaft in his wedges so he can get a better feel.

 

It was something crazy like a reg/stiff....

 

Anybody else ever hear that as well or is it just my overactive imagination??
