TM RAC SS Yellow Flag Wedges

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question in regards to TM RAC SS Yellow Flag Wedges, both box and y-cutter. I have seen one's with and without proto stamped on them (for both box groove and y-cutter). Everything else looks the same stamping wise, and they are the same wedges (i.e., no difference in playing characteristics between the two y-cutters and between the two box grooves, even though one has proto on it while the other does not). If they are indeed the same exact wedge (by same I mean y-cutter vs. y-cutter; box vs. box), why does one have proto and the other does not?

the yellow flag wedges are made in Japan . and are Japan tour only.

i dont know what the difference between the ones that say proto and not are.

The flag color doesn't matter when it comes to tour wedges. It only matters if it's a retail Fe2O3 with a yellow flag, cause then it's Japanese retail, and forged.

Pitch, are the wedges 60°'s? The 60° protos have a heavier head than the non-protos, which means you can put a grind on them without messing up the swingweight.

I believe that the proto ones have milled faces and the others do not. Someone correct me if I am mistaken. I have one listed on eBay right now that is a 60* with a Rifle Shaft and the swingweight is D3. The problem for me is that the bounce is 12* and my fairways and bunkers are firm and I need less bounce. Joe Kwok is going to grind some Vokey's for me and I know that they will be sweet---Dan

I am talking about the SS yellow flag wedges that do not have satin or anything stamped on them...one says Taylormade Proto and has a yellow flag, while the other just says Taylormade and has a yellow flag. Both are the SAME EXACT wedge as far as playing characteristics, but I have no idea why one says proto and one does not. This is the case for Y-Cutters and Box Grooves. In other words, I have seen 2 SS Y-Cutters (1 proto 1 not) and 2 SS Box grooves (1 proto and 1 not), with one saying proto and the other not for each groove.

I am thinking the only protos are for 60, because I have not seen proto on any other loft. I have seen proto stamped on the 60 box groove and 60 y-cutter.

Also, I believe proto is only for the yellow flag, not the red flag...now there is no difference between a yellow flag box groove vs. red flag box groove (same with y-cutters)...I think the yellow flag was the initial version, then later Taylormade made them red flag...but they are the same wedges...but getting back to yellow proto vs. just yellow with no proto, I am still trying to figure that out...but I am thinking all the 60* are proto, and the other lofts are not from what I have seen...but I have never seen a red flag proto

Can anyone really say these are forged? I have a buddy who has a set of the yellows. I have played them beside my retail reds. They felt the same. The satin yellows looked better though. He has maybe 40 rounds on them. They don't have the same dings and dents normally associated with forged wedges. They were on major blowout here a while back. If they are indeed forged I may pick up a couple just for the heck of it.

I took my yellow flagged wedges apart (4). Three had visible copper underlayment when the hosel edge was filed and the other didn't. 1 cast 431 steel (starting to rust), 3 forged because nobody copper underlays stainless steel under chrome. All were finished in satin chrome. That is the only way to tell since the finishes are virtually identical. They made some forged ones for the asian tour (where I got mine from) but didn't stamp them forged because of the limited number of them and didn't want to provide the e-bay market with an instant "windfall" and have to answer questions as to why some forged and where they were forged etc. etc. etc..

Ok so I got my SS wedges today, and they are stunning. I will be trying them out tomorrow. Anyway, the 60 proto did not have a bounce listed on the hosel. Anyone know what the SS yellow flag y-cutter's bounce is? I am thinking 7 because my retail rac satin was 7, but you never know

I have seen these in both 7* and 12* of bounce.

The proto's have around 8° bounce I believe. Like I said, the proto's are heavier heads, made to have a grind put on them. You can certainly play them "un-grinded", but they would probably come out pretty heavy...

It was bouncing on me today, so I think I need a grind...any suggestions? :golfer:
