help with Hibore

mach 1

Recommended Posts

i just purchased a 10.5 degree Hibore with a V2 in a stiff flex. I am hitting the ball really high and I get no roll. My other driver is a 8.5 905T with a YS-6 stiff flex. i am wondering if I should get a Hibore with a lower loft or change the shaft. My good drives are usally about 280 yards. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you.

I use a 10.5 Hi-Bore and do not have this problem. My SS is about 85-90 MPH. If you are swinging that fast, you need a lower loft to lower the launch angle and get more roll.

My swingspeed is 105 mph and I am hitting the 9.5* V2 stiff better than any driver I have ever hit. I have never played Cleveland clubs before and have no reason to praise their new driver. I was so impressed with the Hi-Bore that I also had the tour van build me a Halo to my specs. I played yesterday and had four drives over 300 yards (measured by SkyCaddie). Before the Hi-Bore, I was hitting my best drives around 285 yards. It must be the perfect club/shaft combination, because I have read many negative comments about people hitting it too high or not gaining any distance. I had a TM R7 460 ordered with a Diamana shaft and cancelled the order due to my awesome results with the Hi-Bore.

I just hit the hibore demo at my local club today. I hit it with a bunch of different shafts and settled on 2 that I will try out again next week at another demo day.

A little info about my swing.

My swing speed is ranges from 105 to 107 and I typically hit the ball a little low, occaisionally with a pull-hook. My handicap over the past year has ranged between a +1 to a 2, depending on the driver and the putter.

The hibore/Diamana 83 combo seemed to work really well for me. I launched it high but it never ballooned on me at all. The thing that I noticed about this club was that I didn't hit one single shot that moved more than 5 yards left or right. I deliberetly tried to hit a draw and couldn't move it more than 5 yards.

The other combo I tried was the hibore/Matrix Apache in 9,5 degrees. Again, I launched it higher than I'm used to but no ballooning. I did hit this combo lower than the diamana in the same loft.

When I was on the launch moniter I averaged roughly 14 degrees launch and around 2200-2500 backspin, so I should get some roll out of these drives.

I did hit the hibore/V2 but it seemed to balloon on me, as did the hibore/Prolaunch.

What I'm trying to say is try the hibore out with some other shafts and see if you lower your backspin and get some roll.

I had a 10.5 Hibore with the NV65-S. High, no roll, and probably 10-20 yards shorter than my SMT would carry. There were hazards I never thought twice about carrying that suddenly were in play. And I had gone through the whole launch monitor/tour van experience so I was expecting much more. The rep told me I was carrying it 15 yards farther than my SMT, but when I got out on a course it wasn't even close. It felt like I was hitting a wedge the way the ball shot up. It was forgiving, but I could have hit my 3-wood all day and been in pretty much the same spots.

I returned it and ended up with a G5, which I'm pretty happy with. Still not getting much roll (it is April in Ohio, after all), but the carry is back where I expect it and I've picked up some added forgiveness, which was the plan in the first place. I kind of wonder if a stiffer-tipped or heavier shaft would have helped, but not that much. The G5 is treating me fine so far.

Once again, just so people don't have to look at my previous post, I am hitting a 10.5 Hibore w/stiff V2. I play out in Southern California and we have been getting a lot of rain (for us) but the height on my shots reminds me of a balloon more than bore. In fact I creamed one out at Rancho Park #13 and still had 145 to flag (100 ss). I looked at my partner who has a Mizuno MP-001 380cc w/ aldila NV 8.5 and said "was that too high"? He said yeah that thing ballooned. When i came to my ball I was 45 yards behind his. So what am I saying? I hit it way too high with this setup. I guess it has to do with your attack angle. I have always hit it high. I like the driver but my best drives are way too high. I am waiting for my 9.5 to come into the shop.

I have noticed that when i have fitted guys with the HiBore, they do hit it about 1-2 degrees higher than their current club. I know it is suppose to because the spin is down, but i think there is def somewhere you have to draw the line. So i would almost suggest putting someone in a lower loft because i think it does launch it higher than say an r7 460. With all of their shafts they offer I have yet to see a shaft change trajectory more than 1 degree. Also when you have a guy that swings pretty fast, 110-120 you need your launch angle to be around 11 or 12 because the highest point of your drive is going to be later than say a guy with a 85-95 range. I think i was reading somewhere that tour pros launch angles are somewhere between 10 and 11. But from my experience with the club i would not hesitate trying a lower loft.

As posted before,this is the longest,straightest driver I've ever hit ,,PERIOD.My setup is 10.5 with UST V-2 stiff,,,ss 93-98 mph.As for the roll here is my experience;

When hitting on the range I notice a lower ball flight and less carry with TONS of roll.I believe this is due to range balls being low spin balls.

When I'm on a course playing with a Pro-V the ball flight is perfect with much more carry but still,,LOTS of roll,,20-35 yds worth.

If you think the Hi-Bore is not a low spin club just try to work it with a draw,,,GOOD LUCK,,you will find it difficult but not impossible.

So before you judge the Hi-Bore make sure you have the right shaft,,and most importantly,,BALL combo.BTW,,,I have never owned a cleveland club except for a 588 sand wedge for a brief time,,,my drivers have all been either Callaways or TaylorMades,,,but no doubt,,,the Hi-Bore is for real.

Here is my take as I purchased a Hibore 10.5 Graffaloy Prolaunch Blue 65g stiff this morning. This club is easily the straightest driver I've ever hit. With either a fade or draw you don't see movement of more than 5 yards. Once is starts out its going to stay the path. The problem I believe I have is that I don't put enough spin on the ball to keep it in the air. Even with this setup my launch was about the same as the 11.5 905R with the V275 stiff, but the Hibore did not carry as far. I'm wondering if I should have gone with a 11.5. I'm going to have to check it on the LM to see what the numbers are. The only ones I have in comparison is with the 905R 10.5 YS6+ stiff and it was 2700. I also need to cut the Hibore down as its way long for me but it really didn't seem to affect anything as the ball just went straight.

I tried it low in the center of the face and high 1/2 ball above top and there was very little change in ball flight either way. It was not hard to get use to teeing it lower as my 905R is not the deep either. I was somewhat confused in what loft to get in the Hibore as some said you needed extra loft due to low spin and other were showing super high spin on the launch monitors. I don't see anyway people are getting high spin numbers on this head.

Just spent some time with the Cleveland Tech Van. Hti about every loft and every shaft. Ultimate result was 8.5* with Speeder 652. Absolute Rockets. Really a smooth shaft. I am excited to compare this with my Bridgestone 460 with Diamana 63. On the monitor the High Bore took the spin down quite a bit compared to my Bridgestone.

One other thing, in my discussions with Cleveland I was told to be careful with the torque of your shaft. The head appears not to work its best with a very low torque shaft. You need something from 2.4 and up. which is why you see the stock shafts being the V2 and Aldila.

I definitely agree. For my swing, for example, I did not like the V2 75g shaft which has much lower torque than the V2 67g.

Also, because this thread is asking for assistance with the HiBore, I decided to copy a post I made on a different thread in order to share some of the things I have learned about the HiBore so far. Please forgive the repeat if you read the info below elsewhere. -PC

Before this weekend, I would have said the best ever was my 460 Launcher Comp 9.5 with Diamana 63 S. Flies really nice and works left or right pretty well and very forgiving with a smooth swing. Averaging about 275-280 but have had quite a few over 300. Longest last year was 340 on an uphill dogleg left. Before that, it was my Tour R7 10.5 with a 661 stiff Fuji. Also great club with long rollout.

But then came Sunday. At about 3 PM I picked up my new HiBore 9.5 with the UST V2 67S shaft. I had 8 to pick from and mine is dead square. I was previously fitted on a Cleveland launch monitor and have hit three different heads and six different shafts.

You know how when you set up to hit a new driver for the very first time you are kinda thinking, "Please go high, straight and long! Please don't duck hook or slice into eternity!" It is like the whole tone of the relationship will be set with the first drive.

Well, on the first one I aimed at a telephone pole holding up the net at the end of the short portion of the range about 250 feet away. I missed the pole by three feet and impacted the net about 50 feet off the ground.

Out of the next twenty drives aiming towards the long section of the range, only one was less than 265 and only two were more than 40 feet left or right of the new aiming pole. Only one would have been in the treeline of a tight fairway. Two were over 300 and straight as an arrow.

As the saying goes, I am not this good. However, it is very important to be fitted on a launch monitor in order to optimize loft and shaft of a HiBore. Perhaps far more important than most might imagine.

Since this is not a deep face driver, it takes awhile to relearn how to hit the ball dead center and not on the upper portion of the face as with DF drivers where one is trying to maximize DF gear effect. Along that same line, it is critically important to tee up the ball correctly. I found that I got best results with only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the ball sitting above the crown. Anything more than 1/2 above and performance came down measurably. I have previously been using 2/3 to a full ball above on my deep face drivers to optimize the launch angle.

This is different technology and what works for most DF drivers does not necessarily work for the HiBore. The HiBore almost seems to resent any assistance from the owner/operator in achieving the proper launch angle. I would hazard that the worst thing one could do is to alternate hitting the HiBore and a DF driver in a typical range test session. Each needs a different tempo, swing path, and swingspeed in order to optimize performance. Further, the HiBore head is relatively light compared to most DF drivers.

With the HiBore, the phrase "scary straight" comes to mind. Frankly, thoughts of going left or right don't even enter the equation when setting up to hit with the HiBore. It is weird. Getting the optimum launch angle is all that is of concern. For me, the V2 shaft is far and away the best ever for my own swing, at least in this head. Torque is as tight as a 757 only there is no heavy boardiness, more of a crisp responsive light feeling. It is about 10 to 15% stiffer than the stock Fuji shaft, which still performed well for my swing. However, the dispersion is measurably tighter with the V2 - at least for my swing. The Aldila and Pro Launch shafts did absolutely nothing for my swing in the HiBore. Spin was way too high and dispersion wasn't tight. But, everyone's swing is different. I feel the HiBore highlights those differences in a whole new way and that is part of the problem. New technology requires new thinking and a slightly new approach to the driver swing. That is not unlike the new approach to the driver swing and ball launch that had to be learned with the first DF drivers.

So far, I can fade the HiBore a little, but anything more than a very slight draw has been elusive. Maybe if I try to be really aggressive with the wrists. But, for this kind of predictably straight flight, I can forego the draw or use my 3 wood. I think a slightly closed head would probably draw a little easier, but probably not a lot.
